I removed my printer from devices then tried to add it using HP Smart. Easy Start can find my printer but HP Smart cannot. I am using a USB connection.

Hi @Glenn132,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for reaching out. We understand how frustrating it can be when Easy Start detects the printer, but HP Smart does not, especially over a USB connection. To assist you correctly, could you please confirm the exact model of your HP 5100 printer? For example, is it:
- LaserJet
- Smart Tank
- DesignJet
- OfficeJet
- Photosmart
The troubleshooting steps can differ depending on the product family.
In the meantime, please try these basic steps:
1. Check USB Connection
- Make sure the USB cable is directly connected to the computer (no hub).
- Try a different USB port.
- If possible, try another USB cable.
2. Verify Device Manager (Windows)
- Right-click Start → Device Manager
- Expand Printers or Universal Serial Bus controllers
- If you see the printer listed with a warning symbol, right-click → Update driver
- If it appears as “Unknown device,” uninstall it and restart the PC.
3. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)
Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
This tool can automatically detect connection or driver issues.
4. Restart Everything
- Turn off the printer.
- Shut down the PC.
- Disconnect the USB.
- Power everything back on and reconnect after Windows fully loads.
It’s also important to note that some older HP models are not fully supported inside HP Smart and may require installation using the full feature driver instead of HP Smart.
Once you confirm the exact model and your operating system (Windows version or macOS), we’ll guide you with the correct setup method.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
