I have the same "printer is installed but nothing prints" problem. I have tried many times installing, removing, resintalling but had no success at all.  Here are the information for me:

  • Which version did you start with? Vista Home Premium SP2 64 Bit
  • Which version of Windows 7 did you end up installing? Win7 64 Bit
  • What hp printer was installed in old version of windows?  Deskjet All-in-One F4280
  • Where did the installed software for the printer come from eg CD or Web Download: Web Download

If CD if you can find it now what is the number written on it?

If web download approximatly when you downloaded it? First, I have downloaded from HP Web site on December 22nd or 23rd, 2009. I have though that I have done something wrong.  I have then removed and dowloaded again December 29th, 2009.

  • How is the printer connected to your PC ? eg US, Wired Network or Wireless: USB cable
  • Any other printers installed on your PC? No
  • Lastly the version of the printer driver that is currently installed that will not enable you to print?  HP Deskjet 4200 series (0.3.7071.0)

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi JonW. Thanks for the reply. Now that I look at it, it appears that  have lost duplexing (I'll try the fix you mentioned) and the print quality "Fast Normal". The latter of the two is not so important, but the lack of duplexing is a major problem for me. I guess out of frustration I converted lack of duplexing into loss of all functionality. So far, these are the only problems that I have encountered. I'm yet to test the fax function, which I will need shortly.

What should the configuration of the router be on its web page?

Not sure if I mentioned  that the router is working as I get my internet, both wifi and wired for two pc,  thru it and it works fine. I'm wondering if I should remove the HP  and reinstall it again??

Please let  me know.

In the meantime, if you have an HP deskjet 710C, I'd steer away from all 64-bit versions of Windows (I can advise that it works fine with the 32-bit version of Windows 7).

There is an issue with 64 bit drivers in Vista and Windows 7 for the Deskjet 710, 712, 720, 722, 820, 822 and 1000 series printers.  There is a patch that corrects the issue available here.

After months of not having a functioning printer, I have finally worked out a solution (for my situation)!

Goto the control panel and select view devices and printers.  Right click the HP printer and select 'Printer properties'.  Go to the tab 'Advanced' and check the box next to  'Print directly to the Printer'.  This enables the printer to print from Word and text files!

At least I can print stuff now w00t!

To help others here please provide some additional details:  What was the printer model?  How is it connected  (USB, LAN, Wireless)?  What version of Windows 7 do you have?  32 bit or 64 bit?

Hi, i have a problem with my Photosmart 7960 printer in Windows 7 Home Premium x64. If i want to print a picture on photo paper the only way to print it is select "Automatic" on the type of paper option. If i select "HP Photo Paper", "HP Photopaper High-Gloss", "HP Photo Paper Satin-Matt" (etc.) or even "Other photopaper" the printer doesn't print anything, nothing happen ! The problem is that "Automatic" option is NOT available if i want to print a borderless picture. It's strangely available only if i print a picture with borders. But of course this way i can't print anymore a borderless picture and this is disappointing for me. Is there a way to fix this problem ? I tried to uninstall and re-install its Windows 7 driver but nothing has change. Thanks ! P.S. Sorry if my english is not 100% correct, i'm italian.

I just want to say thank you for the information on how to get my printer printing while using windows 7. I was driving my husband nuts trying to get him to fix it and he tried everything until we came upon your post telling how to fix it. It is great that people like you help people like me (who have no clue) Thanks again

Hey there,

Unfortunately I am also suffering from a similar problem....

I recently upgraded a Toshiba Satellite laptop from Windows Vista 32Bit to Windows 7 32Bit.

From that moment my HP Officejet J4580 Printer no long prints.

I get the "Printing..." message, as was described here by others, it holds for 10 seconds and then disappears - nothing prints...

Needless to say that the same printer worked fine before the upgrade for more than a year...

I've been trying lot's of stuff like installing / reinstalling, playing around with the settings and the solutions described here in the forum....but no good...

Any assistance will be appreciated!

I really need to print stuff for university and don't want to buy another printer...

Thanks.
