Hi. I have a new HP Envy 6065e printer.

When i go into advanced settings in the HP smart app on my laptop, I can set the printer to automatically turn off in 15 minutes or 2 hours. I can also set it to sleep in 5 minutes. Setting it to sleep works fine.

But setting it to auto-off in 15 minutes doesn't work. In the settings it shows that it has been succesfully enabled when I select 15 minutes, but the printer does not shut off in 15 minutes.

I've tried this with both a Wireless connection and a USB connection (with Wireless off) and neither works. I assume it should work with one of these connections  but it doesn't.  How can I get this to work? Thanks.

I would like for it to shut down automatically because i noticed that if it has been on for a while in sleep mode it tends to become non responsive to any imputs and I have to unplug it to get it working again.

Just wanted to mention that my old Envy 4500  turned off automatically in 15 minutes using Auto-off just fine with a similar configuration - basically a USB connection (no Wi-fi connection).

Why doesn't this printer do that? It's been a real pita in general. I've burned through the ink resetting it so many times.

I don't really understand where it states auto-off it will not work if you have basically any kind of connection. But you need a connection to something to print.. even if just a USB cable with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi direct shut off - with no Wi-Fi installation.

I guess I can just manually turn it off with the power button in back, but the printer seems quite buggy. I see these problems all over the internet for the 6000. I'm not even trying to fix that it loses connection in sleep after a while and the whole printer no longer works...not even the power button. You have to take the plug out and back in.

All I would like is if it would auto-off like my old printer did. This way I avoid the above.

The thing is a lot of these issues are blamed on the Wireless connection. But I see the problems and I have no wireless connection or Wi-Fi installation of the printer. The wifi radio is off. It's all USB.  So it's not the Wi-Fi that is the problem.

I think something is messed up with the auto-off.

Also, I think the back is a terrible place to put a power button... making it so hard to reach.

Another follow up.

Installing the Envy 6065e to laptop via USB cable (using my old envy 4500 cable) with the HP Smart app seems to be very problematic. The printer will sometimes just stop responding after it goes into sleep with the USB connection. Also when I access the embedded web server it is much slower than if i was using the Wi-Fi installation and connection.

So I took a closer look at a Wifi installation. It seems my older laptop is only capable of connecting to the 2.4 GHz band on my router. I have a Tri-Band router (2.4GHz, 5GHz1 and 5GHz2) .

It seems the router will automatically move devices to the band with the best band signal.  I've noticed now that it often seems to connect the printer to the 5Ghz band. I can check this in embedded web server.

I've read that the printer needs to connect to one band and should not be moved around especially to the other band.

Meanwhile my laptop can only connect to 2.4 GHz and I think I read that printer and laptop should be on same band.

I have both the 2.4ghz and 5 ghz with the same SSID.

So, I'm going to rename the SSID for the 5 ghz band  and this way force the printer to connect to the 2.4ghz band which is what my laptop can only use. I'll just reconnect other devices to a new SSID 5ghz and see how it goes.

Last update.

Well, so far so good.

I put both the printer and laptop on the same Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz) and they are also on the same channel (9).

Since then, the connection is solid. It always shows "Ready" (or "Printer is Asleep") in the HP Smart app on my laptop.

This even after turning the computer off and back on and the router off and back on or turning the printer off and back on etc. It always quickly reestablishes the connection.

So that seems to help a lot. The wireless connection is also a lot faster in general working with the HP smart app and especially the embedded web server. I had a lot of problems with a USB only connection. As i recall when i was unboxing the printer, there was a little sticker near the USB port that warned the printer had to be used and setup with Wi-fi. But if you read online folks say you can set it up with USB and the HP smart app does have the option.

The "auto-off"  appears to not work with the wireless connection or so I have read. But it also didn't work with the USB connection either. I can set it for 15 minutes (or 2 hours) but the printer doesn't obey.

But it does go to sleep after 5 minutes and as long as it keeps the connection as it has been doing then maybe I will just leave it in sleep mode instead of manually turning it off with the power button in the back. Though I have that option. Would be nicer if the power button was put on the front of the printer for better ergonomics.
