So, I bought a HP Deskjet 1000 from a thrift store. The lady at the counter said it's working and I need to only buy the wires. So I bought a USB cable wire (from Amazon) to connect it to my hp laptop, but the printer isn't turning on and neither is my laptop giving any signs that a USB cable's been plugged in. I'm wondering if I should buy a charger too. For some reason, I thought just plugging into my laptop would enable the printer to work and turn on. I'm also not sure if the charger will help if the printer itself is damaged (having bought this from a thrift store)? What do you think my best bet is? Abandon this printer and buy a new printer? Or buy a charger from Amazon to see if it works?
If I ought to buy a new printer, can people offer some suggestions? (I also bought a HP 61 ink from Amazon so I'm hoping to buy a printer that's compatible with the ink, but it's fine if it's not.) I'm a college student, I don't have a lot of options. I'm looking to buy a printer that would work on my laptop. I don't print much--just readings and my writing drafts, no pictures or anything, everything black and white. I appreciate it, thanks!

I have gone through your Post and would like to help
You need a power cord you connect the printer to the wall outlet to receive power.
Connecting the printer through USB to your computer is for printing. But for Power you need the Power Cord
