I received a printer from a friend who never set it up. The SETUP cartridges did not come with the printer, and I need to bypass the “use SETUP cartridges” message in order to use the HP printer cartridges I bought for this printer. How do I bypass this message? There is no button to press on the screen, and I’ve tried turning the printer off and back on again.

Hi @Cierra98,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The "Use SETUP cartridges" message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8025 usually appears when the printer is asking for the initial setup cartridges that came with the printer. These cartridges are often used to initialize the printer for the first time. Unfortunately, there’s no straightforward way to bypass the message unless you use the setup cartridges.
However, there are a few things you can try:
Install Genuine HP Cartridges and Reset the Printer
Sometimes, the printer may allow you to use regular cartridges after a reset:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
- Install the new, non-setup cartridges (the ones you bought).
- Turn the printer off and back on again after installing the cartridges to see if it proceeds without the setup message.
Check if the Cartridges Are Installed Correctly
Ensure that the HP printer cartridges are installed properly:
- Remove the cartridges and reinsert them to make sure they are in the right position and locked in place.
- Make sure they are not damaged or incompatible with the printer model.
Update the Printer Firmware
Sometimes, the issue might be firmware-related. Here’s how you can update it:
- Download the HP Smart app or go to the HP Support website.
- Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer.
- Follow the instructions to update it, which may resolve issues related to the setup cartridge message.
Perform a Hard Reset
If you haven’t tried a hard reset yet, you can try this:
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the printer from any network and USB connections.
- Hold down the Power button for 20 seconds to perform a hard reset.
- After resetting, reinstall the cartridges and turn the printer back on.
Let me know if any of these work or if you need further help! 😊
