LaserJet Pro MFP3101sdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

1.  Yesterday tried to attach the printer to my desktop pc.  Unsuccessful.  Tried USB connection and Wireless connection.  PC would not 'see' the printer to add it in the Devices and Printers app.  When using wireless connection, printer would give the code needed but I'd get the 'That Didn't Work' message.  Screwed with it for an hour and a half, doing everything HP says step-by-step to get it running.  (I've been setting up and using Windows computers since about 1990 starting with Windows 3.0.)

2.  I powered-off both pc and printer and gave up for the night.

3.  This morning turned on both pc and printer and printer threw C9C6006 on a blue screen.  HP's instructions for resolving don't work.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @RedHat3, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The C9C6006 error on your LaserJet Pro MFP 3101sdw typically indicates a firmware corruption issue or a hardware fault. Given your initial setup struggles and the error appearing after a power cycle, the issue likely stems from the failed setup process or a firmware-related issue.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Step 1: Power Cycle the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Disconnect any USB/Ethernet cables (if connected).
  3. Wait 2–3 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  4. See if the error persists.

Step 2: Perform a Forced Cold Reset (Factory Reset)

This will reset the printer to factory defaults:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Back button (↩️) and the Cancel button () simultaneously.
  3. While holding these buttons, turn the printer back on.
  4. Keep holding until the HP logo appears, then release.
  5. Allow the printer to restart and check if the error is resolved.

Step 3: Update Printer Firmware via USB (if possible)

Since your PC is not detecting the printer via USB, try updating the firmware manually via a USB drive:

  1. Download the latest firmware for the LaserJet Pro MFP 3101sdw from HP’s Support Website.
  2. Format a USB drive to FAT32 and copy the firmware file onto it.
  3. Plug the USB into the printer’s USB-A port (if available).
  4. The printer should detect the firmware update automatically.
  5. Follow on-screen instructions to install.

Step 4: Try HP Smart App for Wireless Setup

  1. Restart your router and ensure the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band is enabled.
  2. Download and install HP Smart on your PC from the Microsoft Store.
  3. Reset network settings on the printer:
    • Open the Control Panel on the printer.
    • Go to Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  4. Open HP Smart on your PC and try adding the printer again via Wi-Fi.

If the issue persists:

  • Try another computer to rule out a PC-specific issue.
  • If the C9C6006 error remains, it’s likely a hardware issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
