Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a CP1215 installed on an HP PC.  all was working well until last week it just stopped printing.  Having done all the basic troubleshooting I now know that my PC sees the printer but Windows 10 does but when I try to install it again I'm getting a "Copy 1" installation which still doesn't print.  My current feeling is that I need to purge the original setup and start afresh but I can't see how to do so.

I've been able to get Windows to add it using a fictional port which I've named "Hewlett Packard" but can't seem to find a port it will actually print to.

Any help would be much appreciated.  BTW I'm no techie but not a novice either.

No problem, many don't answer at all, so you are an exception.

It's wonderful to hear that.
I hope you have many more printing experiences with these printers.

      Hello GDDV ,

This can help you:

Install the HP Smart app

Get the HP Smart app for Android, Apple iOS or iPadOS, Windows, and macOS.

  1. Download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com (Android, Apple iOS), HP Smart - Microsoft Store (Windows, in English), or HP Smart - Mac App Store (macOS, in English).

    Note:

Having trouble downloading the app? Go to Unable to download and install the HP Smart printer app for more information.

  2. If you are setting up the HP Smart app for the first time, you must create or sign in to an HP account to access all printer functions.

Set up your printer using the HP Smart app

Add your printer to HP Smart and follow the guided setup to connect to your computer or mobile device.

Note:

For HP+ printers, there might be additional guided steps required to complete printer setup, such as HP+ choice selection and HP account creation.

  1. If you are setting up the printer on a Wi-Fi network, prepare the printer for setup.

    • Place the printer and the computer or mobile device near the Wi-Fi router.

    • Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during the setup.

    • Enable Bluetooth on the computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.

    • For Windows computers, turn on Windows Update to make sure Windows is always up to date.

    • After installing HP Smart for iOS and Android, enable the mobile device location service and allow the app to use your location to detect the printer and offer solutions during setup.

    • Multiple printers within range of your device might display during setup. Make sure to select the correct printer. Do not select a printer with DIRECT in its name, as it is only for Wi-Fi Direct connections.

  2. Open HP Smart.

    • If this is the first time you are opening HP Smart, the app attempts to detect and set up the printer.

    • If this is not the first time you are opening HP Smart, click Add Printer or the plus sign to find the printer.

  3. On the connection type screen, select Wi-Fi, USB, or Network. The options displayed vary depending on your computer or mobile device. Follow the steps to complete the setup.

If you are using a Wi-Fi connection and your printer is not found, continue to the next step.

  4. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode.

    • Printers with a touchscreen control panel: On the control panel, open the Wireless

      or Setup

menu, select Network Setup or Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.

    • Printers without a touchscreen control panel: Use the control panel buttons to Restore Wi-Fi setup mode on your HP printer.

  5. Within two hours, close then re-open HP Smart, and then add the printer again.

  6. Follow the guided setup screens to complete the printer setup.

Make your HP printer more secure (wireless only)

Secure your printer to prevent others from accessing it.

  • Make sure the network, printer, and device are connected to a secure

connection. Avoid connecting the printer to open, public networks.

  • Use a strong password for your Wi-Fi network (your router), and change it on a regular basis.

  • Create a unique printer display name to easily identify your printer when there are several printers on a network.

  • Limit access from others for printer features that enable remote printing, such as Print Anywhere or HP ePrint.

For more information, go to Secure your HP printer against unwanted access.

Use the HP Smart app to print, scan, copy, and fax

Print, scan, copy, and fax from the HP Smart app home screen tiles. You can also check printer status, troubleshoot issues, order supplies, and set printer preferences.

Example of the HP Smart app home screen (mobile, computer)

  • To print, select a print job type from the home screen, select the item to print, use the photo editing tools if necessary, and then change any print job settings.

  • To scan, choose to scan from the printer scanner glass or document feeder, import a photo, or use the computer or mobile device camera to capture a photo or document. Use the editing tools if necessary, and then print, save, or share the scanned item. For more information, go to How to scan with an HP Printer.

  • To copy (Android, iOS only), open the Copy tile, use the camera to capture a document or photo, select the size and number of copies, and then print the item in color or black and white.

  • To manage the printer, click the picture of your printer on the home screen to change preferences and options, check the printer status, and more.

  • To add or remove home screen tiles, select Personalize Tiles at the bottom of the screen (Android, iOS) or in the App Settings

    (Windows, Mac).

  • To learn about other app features, select one of the following links:

    • Diagnose and Fix: Run this troubleshooting tool built into the HP Smart app for Mac and Windows computers if you are experiencing issues with your printer.

    • Print Anywhere: Use your printer when you are away from home and have access to a cellular network or Wi-Fi with internet access.

    • Shortcuts: Create one-touch Shortcuts (formerly Smart Tasks) to quickly complete repetitive tasks such as emailing, printing, and saving scans.

    • Mobile Fax: Securely send documents to a fax machine or fax-capable printer.

Sadly this didn't work either as the program can't find the printer.

HP Recommended

Check the system for

  • TuneUp`s
  • Optimization Tools
  • Cleanup Tools

disable them, better uninstall them.

Here's what you need to do:

  1.
  2. Disconnect printer/scanner from computer- Disable WLAN, WiFi and/or remove the USB or LAN cable.- Do not switch off the printer >> unplug the power cord from the socket!
  3. Uninstall HP printer software, and then remove the printer from your Devices list.
  4. Restart the PC
Admin rights and no Window S-Mode!
  5. Close all programs
  6. Reconnect the printer to the mains and switch it on (if this does not happen automatically) but do not connect to the computer.
  7. Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads double-click on the EXE.
    Allow changes to the system!
  8. Via USB, means wait until the installation asks to connect the printer/scanner.
  9. The installation, takes a little longer (more than 2 minutes!), was completed successfully, now you must ...
  10. Restart the PC again
  11. Now the installation is complete.

Document error messages accurately, even better is to take a screenshot of it and upload here.

I'm afraid I've abandoned this because it just seems too time consuming.  I've moved the CP1215 to another PC and it works perfectly.  I swapped it on mine with a little Deskjet 2600 which works fine.  I still cannot figure out why the CP1215 wouldn't work where it's been quite happily producing the goods for 10 months and I fear I need to find a way to purge the software from the machine but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Thank you for your help.

Do I understand correctly, the other PC also has Windows 10 and here the software works without problems?

I do apologise for my late reply.

Both PC's are similar, both are HP towers and are running Windows 10 Pro (64 bit).  On swapping the printers I found that each PC recognized them straight away in fact, with the CP1215 there was no personal intervention needed.  The little desk-jet was different.  Win 10 saw it as a Wi-Fi machine (which is is) but stammered when I tried to insert the Wi-Fi installation code, so I installed it manually as a USB printer.

The only odd thing was that test prints on the laser printer had a red and yellow smear down the length of the A4 sheets which indicated to me both of those colours needed new toner cartridges.  Fortunately I had them to hand and changed them over.  Now both printers are working better than they ever were in their original locations.

Computers will never stop surprising me.
