Printer is powered and lights appear fine. Its status in HP Smart shows as 'printer is asleep'. Printing anything shows 'printer error' message in the system print queue. Q1: Why does printer become asleep every so often? Q2: How to wake up the printer?

Hi @Frustrateduse32,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for reaching out regarding your HP ENVY 6458e All-in-One Printer. We understand that you're experiencing issues with the printer frequently entering sleep mode and not waking up as expected.
Here are several ways to wake it up:
1. Press a Button on the Printer
- Tap the power button or touchscreen (if available) to wake it manually.
2. Send a Print Job
- Sometimes sending a print job will wake it, but if the connection is unstable, it may fail with a “printer error.”
3. Use HP Smart App
- Open the HP Smart app on your PC or phone.
- Select the printer and try printing a test page or scanning—this often wakes it up.
4. Disable Deep Sleep Mode (if available)
- Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Print a Network Configuration Page to get the printer’s IP address.
- Enter the IP in a browser.
- Look for Power Management or Sleep Settings.
- Set the sleep timeout to a longer duration or disable deep sleep.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
