This is what I did to fix the issue...
I did try all the other suggestions that have been posted but it would find the printer in one part of the instructions and in other parts it wouldn't.
I spent maybe 5 hours trying to resolve this issue and finally this worked...just sharing for others:
I did up to the part before the Install latest drivers and it worked.
Question:- I have a brand new HP Officejet Pro 8710 printer which suddenly went offline. My printer is connected to the wireless network but still, it says printer offline. When I tried to print from my other computer it prints fine but not from my laptop. I can print from my iPad and iPhone. We ran HP Scan and Doctor but nothing works. I don’t know what’s going wrong with this HP 8710 printer. Can anybody tell me why my HP Officejet pro 8710 is offline and how to fix this printer offline error?
Why does my HP Officejet Pro 8710 keeps going offline?
Answer:- Firstly, the most common reason why HP Officejet Pro 8710 printer goes offline is due to a poor connection between computer and printer. It could be due to the router firmware update, loose connection or installation of a new router. So if you want to bring your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 offline to online, please check all these factors.
- HP Printer is OFF.
- Printer Drivers Misconfigured.
- Loose USB Connection.
- Wireless Connection Problem.
- Print Jobs Stuck.
Steps to bring HP Officejet Pro 8710 offline to Online.
- Re-setting the print environment.
- Install the latest printer Driver.
- Set HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 as a default printer.
Re-setting the print environment
Resetting the printer can help to restore a connection between the computer and the printer.
- Turn the HP Officejet 8710 printer off, wait for about 10 – 15 seconds, and then disconnect the power cord from the printer.
- Turn off the computer.
- Connect the power cord again to the printer, and then turn on the printer.
- If your printer connected to a wireless connection, then restart the router.
- Turn on the computer.
- Try to print any document from the printer.
- If printer prints, you are good to go.
- If the HP Officejet 8710 printer cannot print and remains offline, continue to the next step.
Install the latest printer Driver
- Firstly, uninstall the old printer drivers.
- Restart your computer for a fresh installation.
- Go to 123.hp.com.
- Type your printer model name (HP Officejet 8710) and download the latest drivers for the HP printer.
- Select USB or Wireless connection to complete the Setup.
- Try to print any document from the printer.
- If printer prints, you are good to go.
- If the HP Officejet 8710 printers cannot print and remain offline, continue to the next step.

The next step would be:
Set HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 as default printer
- Go to the Settings Icon, and then click Devices and Printers.
- Select HP Officejet Pro 6978 Printer.
- Right-click on the printer that is active.
- Select Set as Default Printer.
- Try to print any document from the printer.
- If printer prints, your printer is online now.
