Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Have 5540 installed to desktop PC (Win 7 x64) via USB cable and all is well. Just adding a HP Laptop (Win 10 x64) to my home, and connected 5540 to Laptop via home network/router. Downloaded and installed software/driver from HP website. When I try to print from Laptop, printer preferences shows "Print on both sides manually", and does not show that a photo paper tray is available. When I open the Printer Properties and click on the Device Settings Tab, I see that "Automatic Duplexing Unit: not installed", "Photo Tray: Not Installed", and "Automatic Configuration:Off". When I click on the word "Off", I get a box in which I can choose Off or Update Now, I click on Update Now, and Automatic Duplex changes to installed, Photo tray doesn't change state, and Auto Config reverts to Off. I clickApply, then OK to close Property Settings. I the immediately open the Printer Properties - Device Settings, and now both the Duplex and Photo Tray show installed. I then open Printer Preferences, but Duplex only offers manual duplex, and Photo tray is not an option. Close Printer Preferences, open Printer Properties - Device settings, and Duplex/Photo Tray have both reverted to Not Installed. I have downloaded and run  "HP Print and Scan Doctor", which reports all is okay.

How do I get Automatic Duplexing Unit and Photo Tray installed in printer to be recognized by Printer Preferences????

Hello, @Mark-300 – Hope you are well 🙂

Welcome to the HP Forum! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!

I understand that you are facing issues while printing 2-sided / duplex on your Envy printer. First off, it's not advisable to print 2-sided on Photo paper. So, if you are using photo paper, please do not print 2-sided. This will result in a paper jam and other issues.

Alternatively, try the steps below to reinstall the drivers which could help you fix the issue:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer, if present.
  • Go to Control Panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control Panel – Devices and Printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now, click http://hp.care/2q44L1f to download and install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
  • Restart the PC and check.

I found a wonderful document to help you print on 2-sided. Please follow the steps listed here: Print on both sides of the paper with an HP printer

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!

Good luck 🙂

That didn't work for me

I did find this tho:

Follow the instructions for removing the HP drivers from your computer device settings, device manager and software apps that relate to HP so you have no printer listed anywhere at all.

Don't download any drivers from the HP site.

Then go to settings, devices, and click +Add a printer or scanner button. Windows will find and install its own driver and you will be back with color and auto duplex printing. To scan, select scan on the printer itself and use the windows scan/fax app.

Worked for me, tho currently not able to print from Acrobat despite re-installing

This worked for me (not installing HP drivers and instead going to Settings/Add Printer) although it took two attempts because the first time I tried it, I don't think I successfully deleted every HP reference from my computer. Not all the HP drivers/files start with 'HP' - some start with a shortened version of my printer name. Very happy to have this fixed now!

All of a sudden, somehow, my ENVY 5540 software changed, and I can no longer print in color.  Of course, my first assumption was that the "Print in Grey Scale" option was chosen, so I went into the printer settings to change it and it was no longer there.  There is no way to change from Blank Ink only to color anymore.  I poured over all the posts online to fix this problem, and nothing has worked for me.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled three times using different sources of drivers.  Can you tell me, Petra, what the other file names you found that needed to be uninstalled before being able to complete erase any remnant of the ENVY 5540?

Hi there. Two things a) I would go to the hp site and look for the hp drivers. If you click download then (if you have your settings set up to  ask you where it should save it) you will get prompted to save the driver somewhere. This allows you to see the default filename of the various drivers. So then you can abandon that download and then search your computer for that filename and similar filenames b) then I searched my C drive for 'HP' and deleted anything that looked like it was related to HP the computer. That worked for me.
