My HP Smart stopped working, I tried to reinstall it from the Micorsoft App Store, but I get this error. I tried the obvious uninstall, reboot etc, still doesn't work, I think I just need to download the app setup and install it myself, but I cannot find it anywhere - keep getting redirected to the Microsoft Store...

Welcome to the HP Community.

It is not possible to simply download and install HP Smart (Windows) - at this writing, the only source for the application is the Microsoft Store

The error in your image seems to indicate the app is "open" in your system.

As a recheck of the obvious, make sure the application is not listed in Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

If you find it, uninstall and Restart the computer.

What else?

Reminders

Check your Security Software to be sure it is not blocking the installation.

Most Security software can be set to "allow" programs and application you want to install / run on the system.

Disconnect from Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection before downloading.

It is not installed, I have rebooted (many times) I've checked services and processes in Task Manager, it is not showing in Apps.

I've spent hours trawling for a direct download and I always end up back in the microsoft store with the same error

OK.

The HP Smart app for Windows is only available from the Microsoft Store.

Add this to the checkpoints already mentioned:

Account – Type and Permissions

The user Account that installs and uses the printer application and software should have privilege (admin type account).  In addition, there should be a Microsoft Account tied to that user accountAccounts that lack a UserID / Password cannot be used.  Accounts might require a Microsoft Account to install software, access parts of the Windows file system, run the spooler, or perform other tasks.

What else?

Your printer must support the application.

Not all printers support HP Smart.

If the app won't install, consider installing the Full Feature Software for your printer.

Depending on the printer, you might be able to use the HP Easy Start software wrapper to install the full driver.

If you need  help to install the printer software, you'll need to tell us the exact model of your printer.

That's not helpful. Why is it only available in the Microsoft Store?

Surely, for issues like this, there should be an executable available for install?

It was working fine, and has been for months - all of a sudden it stopped, I tried repair/reset - no joy.

So I thought I would uninstall and reinstall it, as that often works

The uninstall was fine, but I now get the error in Microsoft Store.

HP Smart is not installed, is not open, and is not running, I have performed two full shutdowns and five reboots, still the store comes up with the error.

I tried the full feature/offline install and it installed some clunky legacy software, and refused to recognise my printer or my instank ink subscription - so the printer is now refusing to work because the ink is "not authorised" - it is, I have an active subscription, and 48 hoyrs ago it was working fine.

All I need is a stand alone executable to install HP Smart that is not tied to the store...

I understand you want an alternative to installing from the Store.  I can't do anything about it, but I do get it.

The problem with the store might be tied to your account.  Try a different account.

The problem might be tied to something gone wrong in Windows.  Harder to prove / find.

Ask for help with the broken store in the  Microsoft Community

I think you can stop rebooting, reloading, stomping on this from the same perspective.

The absolute solution - unwanted, not liked, and almost always works:  Reload Windows

Having naught else to offer at this point, I must withdraw.

Good Luck.

I managed to resolve this myself, there were some stray HPSmart entries in the registry, I used regedit to remove them, and then I went into the app store - instead of going to the main page for HPSmart, I went to "my Apps" and clicked the "update" button next to HPSmart and it has now loaded and is running perfectly.
