I have the exact same problem. This is the 2nd HP Printer I've run circles around every couple months trying to get it to connect to MacOS machines. We only have Safari installed. It's the default browser.
I'm officially done. I can't spend an hour online, or on the phone, with HP customer service every couple months - AND at the most inopportune times. I have a meeting in an hour and can't get the scanner to connect to my computer. Beyond FRUSTRATING!

HP Software has been garbage for so many years now. Their privacy defeating approach to register with this silly account (that most people will fake anyway) to even ferking scan something makes their products just so cumbersome and tedious to use.
I am working against a deadline and have to waste my time with fixing a screwed up product, that uses some external browser to even log-in to their own web service. Are you even serious??? The product says PRO on the label, but it is plagued by amateurish software and an ivory tower mentality when it comes to customer satisfaction.
Why is it that the greatest clowns seem to be crowding the product management floors these days and why does HP employ the worst of them???
So many questions. Still no answers that work for me...

Same here. I held HP in such high esteem a few years ago. Now I rather recommend Korean or Chinese products, because those guys don't even bother to develop software that stops you from working. HP Smart?!? Oh the irony...

You don't need to change default browser settings.
Just follow below steps..
1) Close All Safari windows
2) Open HP printer and login
3) Go to Safari window.. It would open a browser in private window in Safari.
4) Just login and it redirects to Printer.

After using my printer / scanner for years with no problem, I recently started getting the same issue. When HP Smart opens Chrome, Chrome takes over my Mac and always stays on top, and I can't use my printer. I've tried the uninstall / reinstall to no avail. After reading this post, I'm going to try the Safari solution (I have to close Chrome before I can do anything else because of HP's glitch).

I found a work around that works on Microsoft Edge ad doesn't use the HP App.
1.) Open system preferences.
2). Click on "Printers & Scanners"
3.) Window opens and you can choose "Print" or "Scan".
4.) Click on "Scan".
5.) Click on "Open Scanner"
6). Set up your scan in a new window.
I don't have Chrome installed so I'm not sure if it works with Chrome but this eliminates the need to go into the HP software.
