Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Problem started when the 902XL I installed wouldn't work, since it's new from a 3rd party.  I see lots of messges that HP changed the Firmware to stop users from using cartridges from anyone but HP.  I want to reset the computer ( based on recommendations ) to original state to be able to accept the cartridges that i've already purchased, but I need the IP # and that screen now won't open.

Now What ?

@Cris209, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 Firmware and Cartridge Compatibility!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you are unable to access the Settings screen directly from your printer, you can follow these alternative methods to find the IP address:

Print a Network Configuration Page

  1. Turn on your printer and ensure it is connected to the same network as your computer.
  2. Open the control panel on your printer.
  3. Press the Wireless button to display the Wireless Status screen.
  4. Press the Network Settings menu, and choose "Print Network Configuration Page."

This page will provide various details, including the printer's IP address.

Use the Printer's Control Panel

  1. Go to the Home screen on your printer's control panel.
  2. Navigate to the Setup menu.
  3. Select Reports and then Network Configuration.

Use Your Router's Web Interface

  1. Open your web browser on a device connected to the same network as your printer.
  2. Enter your router’s IP address in the address bar (you can usually find this information in your router’s documentation or on the device itself).
  3. Log in to the router’s web interface.
  4. Navigate to the connected devices section or DHCP client list to see a list of all devices connected to your network along with their respective IP addresses.

Important Note About Third-Party Ink Cartridges

HP printers may require genuine HP cartridges to function correctly due to firmware updates. If you are having trouble with third-party cartridges, consider:

  1. Using genuine HP cartridges to ensure compatibility and to avoid potential firmware conflicts.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
