Hi @nc449,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Filter failed" error message when trying to print from your MacBook Air to the HP LaserJet P1006 usually indicates an issue with the printer driver. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue.
Update macOS and Printer Drivers
- Ensure your macOS is up to date by going to System Preferences > Software Update.
- Visit the HP support website to download the latest drivers for the HP LaserJet P1006, if available.
Remove and Re-add the Printer
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP LaserJet P1006 from the list and click the - button to remove it.
- Click the + button to add the printer back. Ensure you're selecting the correct driver when prompted.
Reset Printing System
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system.... This will remove all printers and reset all settings.
- Add your HP LaserJet P1006 again.
Check Printer Connection
- Ensure that your printer is connected correctly to your MacBook Air. If it's a USB connection, try a different USB port or cable. If it's a network printer, ensure it is connected to the same network.
Check Printer Queue
- Open Printers & Scanners and check if there are any jobs stuck in the queue. If there are, cancel them and try printing again.
Test with Another Application
- Try printing from a different application to see if the issue is specific to one application.
Use AirPrint (if supported)
- If your printer supports AirPrint, try adding it as an AirPrint printer. Go to Printers & Scanners, click the + button, and see if it appears as an AirPrint option.
Reinstall HP Software
- If none of the above steps work, consider uninstalling the HP software and drivers, then reinstalling them from the HP website.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

All good advice. And I had done all of that. I finally (and what a frustrating circuitous slog this is!) got an actual HP human on the phone. This printer is "obsolete" and no longer supported by HP, meaning there are no printer drivers compatible with both the printer firmware and current Mac OS. I guess this is how they sell new printers...
