I recently got a new laptop with windows 11. My old laptop was windows 10. The new laptop sees the printer, but I'm unable to scan. Is it possible to get the scan working or do I need to get a new printer/scanner?

🖨️ Basic Printer Copy & Scan Test (No PC Required)
1. Test the Printer Using the Physical Copy Function:
Place a document face-down on the scanner bed of your printer.
Press the physical "Copy" button or use the touchscreen "Copy" option on the printer.
If the printer successfully scans and prints a copy, this confirms the printer is working properly.
✅ This means the issue (if any) is likely with the software on your computer — not the printer.
If the printer doesn’t copy, there may be a hardware issue with the scanner or printer itself.
2. Set Up Scanner Driver on Your PC (If Needed):
Download and install HP Easy Start from HP’s official website.
Follow the prompts to detect and set up your printer.
This will automatically install the latest drivers, including the scanner software, resolving most scanning issues.

Everything works find between the old Windows 10 laptop and the printer/scanner, so there isn't a hw issue. HP easy start on the new Windows 11 laptop is unable to find the printer. Even manually entering the IP address it fails to find the printer.

Hi @fillup1,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Your HP Officejet 4500 Wireless All-in-One (G510n) was designed for older Windows environments, and while basic printing can often still work on Windows 11, the scanning software and drivers might not be fully compatible with the newer operating system.
1️. Check Windows Built-in Scan App
Windows 11 includes a native Windows Scan app you can try:
- Go to the Microsoft Store.
- Search for Windows Scan.
- Install and open it.
- See if it detects your Officejet 4500 and allows scanning.
2️. Use Windows Fax and Scan
- In the Windows search bar, type Fax and Scan.
- Open Windows Fax and Scan.
- Click New Scan.
- Select your printer.
- Try scanning.
3️. Download HP Full Feature Software
Although HP no longer updates drivers specifically for Windows 11, you can try installing the Windows 10 version in compatibility mode:
- Go to the HP Officejet 4500 G510n driver’s page
- Download the Full Feature Software and Drivers for Windows 10.
- Right-click the installer > Properties > Compatibility tab.
- Set to run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 10.
- Install and restart your PC.
4️. HP Print and Scan Doctor
This free HP tool can help:
- Download HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Run it — it will diagnose issues and attempt to fix them automatically.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
