HP Recommended

I purchased the HP smart 5101.  I was charged $87.51 via Apple.com   The only question was do I want a longer term.  I do not recall if it was lifetime, or annual.  Either way I felt regret I did not seek more information before paying.  I feel hP is the "smart" one and I am the dumb one for going along with the fee.  HP has been where is stingy regarding detailed information. Why? What do the buyers get for their money?
