To auto-start the HP Smart app to Windows 11, I need to put the app with path to the Windows Startup folder. If you add the installed version to the install location or executable name, it will run until the next HP Smart update and then break.
Could you remove the version identifier from the installation path and executable name?
I'm willing to explore another way to set HP Smart to launch on Windows Start.
Thank you,

Hi @PacoCH,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To set the HP Smart app to auto-start on Windows 11 without worrying about version changes, you can create a shortcut in the Startup folder. Here’s how to do it without including the version number.
Steps to Create a Startup Shortcut for HP Smart:
Locate the HP Smart Installation Path:
- Usually, HP Smart is installed in a path similar to:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\HPInc.HPSmart_*\HP Smart.exe
- You need to find the actual path without the version number (the * will represent the version).
Create a Shortcut:
- Right-click on your desktop or in a folder where you want to create the shortcut.
- Select New > Shortcut.
- In the location field, enter:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\HPInc.HPSmart_*\HP Smart.exe
- Click Next, and name the shortcut (e.g., "HP Smart").
Move the Shortcut to the Startup Folder:
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type shell:startup and press Enter. This will open the Startup folder.
- Drag and drop the shortcut you created into this folder.
Alternative Method: Use Task Scheduler
If you prefer a more reliable method that doesn't rely on the Startup folder:
Open Task Scheduler:
- Press Win + S and search for Task Scheduler. Open it.
Create a New Task:
- In the right pane, click on Create Basic Task.
- Name the task (e.g., "HP Smart Launch") and click Next.
Set Trigger:
- Choose When I log on and click Next.

Set Action:
- Select Start a program and click Next.
- In the Program/script field, enter:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\HPInc.HPSmart_*\HP Smart.exe
Complete the Task:
- Click Next, review the settings, and click Finish.
Notes:
- Using the wildcard (*): Windows does not support wildcards in the path, so you will have to manually update the path when the app is updated.
- Verify After Updates: After HP Smart updates, check the installation path to see if it has changed and update the shortcut or Task Scheduler action accordingly.
By following these steps, HP Smart will auto-start when you log into Windows 11 without being affected by version changes.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
