I tried the wireless install option but prompted me for usb install - but it can never find the printer. Is this printer too old for a mac? The printer works fine on windows 7 and 10.

Your link took me to HP where the list of compatible printers did not show my p1102w. The instructions took me to https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/closure/hp-laserjet-pro-p1102-printer-series/411039...
I downloaded the .dmg file and opended it. A small window titled Install Hewlitt-Packard Printer Software appears with one file named HewlittPackardPrinterDrivers.pgk. I open this file and get a pop-up message with "this volume does not meet the requirements for this update.".
Maybe my laser printer of 4-5 in age is too old. I blame that on Apple mostly for this printer works fine on Windows 7, 8 10 and earlier versions of MacOS prior to Big Sur - unless I'm mistaken in the error message.
