I was working on envelopes/plain paper and now I can't get it to change paper settings back to plain paper!

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

There are a couple of ways to manage the Tray and Paper.

User Guide

Pages 13-14

NOTE: If you change the paper size, be sure to load the correct paper in the input tray and set the
paper size on the printer control panel.

Start

  • (Re)load the paper you intend to use in the printer

Next

  • Change the paper size / type using the printer control panel

OR

  • Change paper size / type using the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Remember >> EWS is accessible in your browser and from within the HP Smart application.

What else?

Were it mine to do, and other methods to convince the printer the paper was changed failed to work,

I'd perhaps Restart the printer, computer, and the router that controls your network.

Why?  Could be a communication issue either within the printer or between printer and "everywhere" else.

What else?

If you have access to the printer software and the Printing Preferences,

If the printer is aware of the paper size / type loaded in the tray,

Select / Update the default Printing Preferences

For example, select and leave Everyday Printing as the default Printing Preference.

Why?

Selecting a default "starting set" of settings can help certain types of job configurations -- for example, when using the over-simplified "Cntrl-P" to print without selecting any job settings.  Pre-selecting Printing Preferences also reduces the chances of missing something unexpected.
