When I go to the Start Menu and double click on the HP Officejet 8600 Pro, nothing happens. I can scan from the printer to the computer, I can print from the computer to the printer but I cannot open  the software - it has a better scanning method that will allow me to modify what I am scanning. This is very fustrating !!

            Hello Vulcan96,

Open the control panel,

Click on Devices and Printers, right click on your printer,
click on set as default printer, right click again on your printer icon, create a shortcut, on the desktop, click yes. Close everything, open the Windows desktop, left click on the new shortcut, a window with your printer menu opens, with: Print, Scan, Fax, Ink level. As below:

If you don't have this menu, you will need to uninstall the current printer driver, download and install the new driver complete HP.
