I tried your above suggestion, with no success.  After going to control panel, devices and printers, add a device, I clicked on my printer (which showed up).  Then I got the below message.  I tried a fix I found on the HP support page (unplugging printer, waiting 60 seconds, plugging back in), but still got the same message.  Thanks for your help...even if it didn't help.  🙂  I will keep trying to figure out how to fix my problem, and maybe someday I can get the color option back on my printer when printing.  And I don't think I mentioned it, but I can print a file in color from my old computer, just not from my new computer.  (But when I print a test page with my new computer I do get color.)

That's Unfortunate. This seems like a conflict between the Win 10 Operating system and the printer driver.

 

Update Windows

Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & Security Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

 

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

Click here to download the file. Once downloaded, make sure to run the file and click on 'Fix printing'

 

If this did not help, create a new user account on your PC and try installing the printer driver from here

I was going to follow your suggestions above, but before running the Print & Scan Doctor I needed to reinstall my printer.  So this time I thought...I'll install it from the disk instead of from the HP web site, as I've done i the past (since when I first try to install from the disk it suggests doing it from the web site).  And guess what happened?!  I can print in color again!  Don't know what the problem was installing from the web site, but at least everything is fixed now.  Thanks for all your help and suggestions...

hp printer monochrome removal and reinstall

 

Remove the USB cable if connected

 

  • 1. In Windows, search for and open Programs and features 
  • 2. Select your HP Printer 
  • 3. Select Uninstall 
  • 4. In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers 
  • 5. In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device' 
  • 6. Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo. 
  • 7. Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s") 
  • 8. Click on the "Drivers" tab 
  • 9. Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom 
  • 10. Select Ok
  • 11. Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  • 12. Close Devices and Printers 

 

The problem is resolved. However, it took more steps than originally described - specifically step 3 below. The steps are:

 

 

 

  • 1. Remove device in control panel
  • 2. Remove driver via printui.exe /s
  • 3. Remove all remnants of HP printer programs
  • 4. Shut down printer and PC
  • 5. Download new software and drivers
  • 6. Install new software and drivers

Now it works. Step 3 is critical - I tried the routine recommended by HP (which ignored that step) many times, and it never worked.

 

Root uninstall and reinstallation of printer drivers: 

 

 

  • 1. Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP OfficeJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • 2. Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • 3. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • 4. Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • 5. Again, go to the run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to the Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

It's the last step. I looked for any other "HP" folder at that point and deleted it as well.
