I cancelled Instant Ink on my HP+ printer and removed the ink cartridges. I bought HP original ink from the HP store. Now it says I must enroll in Instant Ink to print!!

  • If you do not want to enroll, remove the Instant Ink cartridges and purchase Original HP Ink or Toner directly from the retailer of your choice.

  • I did!!! Cannot print.

Hi @nellekay,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for explaining the situation, Manjunath. You're right to be frustrated with this issue with HP+ printers and Instant Ink Enrollment. Here's what’s happening and how to fix it:

Why You Can’t Print After Cancelling Instant Ink

HP+ printers are locked to HP Instant Ink or HP Original cartridges. Even after cancelling Instant Ink, the printer may still be trying to use the Instant Ink cartridges, which are subscription-bound and will stop working once the plan is cancelled.

Fix Steps to Get Your HP+ Printer Working Again

1. Remove All Instant Ink Cartridges

Even if you already did this, double-check:

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove all cartridges labelled “Instant Ink” or “HP Instant Ink Ready”.
  • These cartridges are disabled after cancellation.

2. Install Only HP Original Retail Cartridges

  • Use cartridges purchased from a store or HP.com, not Instant Ink replacements.
  • Make sure they are new and unused.
  • Insert them firmly until they click into place.

3. Restart the Printer

  • Power off the printer.
  • Unplug it for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power on.

4. Reconnect to HP Smart App

  • Open the HP Smart
  • Sign in with your HP account.
  • Go to Advanced Settings → Web Services and ensure it’s enabled.
  • If needed, reset Web Services to clear any leftover Instant Ink settings.

5. Update Firmware

  • From the printer control panel:
Go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update Printer → Check Now.
  • Or use the HP Smart App → Advanced Settings → Printer Update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
