I printed something from from my printer this morning.  The first page worked fine but since then it has been showing a message below.  I have quadruple checked, there is ABSOLUTELY NO PAPER stuck anywhere in this printer.  I am unable to reset it because I cannot get of this screen.  I have turned it on and off unplugged it and still the screen comes up and I am stuck.  What can I do?

@waynehazle, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Based on the error message:

"Document Feeder Jam – The original is jammed in the document feeder..."

This is a false jam error commonly seen on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 when the printer mistakenly detects a jam in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) even though there's no paper stuck.

Here’s how to resolve it:

Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on.

Clean the ADF and Sensors

Even if no paper is visible, dust or tiny fragments can trigger false jam errors.

  • Open the ADF cover (top lid where you feed documents).
  • Look for any small bits of paper, dust, or foreign objects.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean:
    • ADF rollers
    • ADF separator pad
    • ADF paper path
    • ADF sensors (usually small black squares or lenses)

Reset the ADF Mechanism

  • Open and close the ADF cover firmly.
  • Try feeding a single sheet of paper through the ADF to test.

Try a Firmware Update

Sometimes firmware bugs cause persistent jam errors.

Use the Control Panel to Clear the Error

  • If the OK button is visible, press it.
  • If the screen is frozen, try accessing the Home button or Settings after the power reset.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!

So I brought the printer to my office and thoroughly cleaned it as best I could.  Still did not work.  Then I tried to install the firmware.... but because it is not on the network her at the office and I can't get to the menu to put it on the networkl I could not update the firmware 😞

I will go home with it, where I should see it on the network and then try to install the firmware
