Envy 6530e printer. Bought today and it's driving me mad. Can't set it to print one sided - it printed both sides (after taking 30 minutes to link to laptop) despite my selecting one sided on laptop and then said cartridges were low on ink. I have literally JUST installed them.  So it has wasted my ink printing stuff I can't use. Absolutely furious. App virtual assistant was useless trying to solve this....any ideas please??

Welcome to the HP English Community --

Hopefully something will help -

If not, consider the attempt as well intended.

Please ignore the bits you cannot use.

The printer can print one sided --

The printer does support automatic duplex on supported paper sizes and paper types.

"Supported" does not mean forced to use - Automatic duplex is simply a feature of the hardware.

Default Print Options might impact job output --

If you are satisfied with the other settings and your network connection setup,

Scroll down (in this message) to the section that includes "Tray and Paper"

Start...

=======================================

Printer and the Network

Available apps / software are related to the Operating System / version.

and

How you set up the options has much to do with which app / software you are using.

What else?

If it is taking 30 minutes to find the network, there is something missing from your printer to network configuration.

Not mandatory,

Perhaps consider using a static / manual IP address.

Starting on Page 19

Example - EWS - Network - Wi-Fi

Note:   It is not mandatory that you use a manual / static IP address.  Doing so can improve stability.

Example – Alternate EWS format (Select new printers and some Laser Printers)

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Network > Primary Ethernet > Check / Adjust Status and other tabs...

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Network > Wi-Fi > Section IP Config > IPv4

=======================================================

Next,

EWS - Tray and Paper and Default Print Options

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next (as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default options / tray

Print Tasks and Jobs

What you do depends on your Operating System, whether you have installed the full driver (where appropriate), and the application or software you are using to configure and submit the job to the printer.

Example - Windows - Adobe Reader - PDF Print - Main Menu / Options

=======================================================

Once properly added to the network, the printer should not simply fall off the network, struggle to reconnect, finally re-establish communication on its after 30 minutes, and finally print.

It is possible that some tasks, for example, COPY  - as started from the printer control panel - might struggle with a mis-matched paper size / type and then take long minutes to finally produce any output.

The ink cartridges that come with a new printer do tend to hold less ink than those cartridges you purchase -- "Setup" cartridges are intended to get you started but not intended to provide the same number of pages as would (for example) a full set of XL ink cartridges.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive reply. I will certainly try what you suggest. After days of wrestling with my old printer, giving up and getting a new one, I lost all patience! 😀 I find technology challenging at the best of times - I just want to plug it in and press start!

Thanks again DragonFur

You are welcome.

Hopefully, things will work out enough that you can use the printer as you want it done.

Printers are not quite "Plug and Play"  -- They are complicated and sometimes fussy.

There are all kinds of promises made -- but plug and play printers are about where self-driving cars are at this point - "Sort of but not quite all the way there".
