I cannot seem to get my scan to email working.  I have installed and uninstalled the drivers a dozen times.  When I run the print and scan doctor, it takes forever and then reports it cannot find scan application software.  I have the printer working.  My connection is through Wi-fi and the printer screen reports connected and signal excellent.  I am convinced I have a setting wrong somehow but cannot discover what is wrong.  It says I have an email server configured, but I don't believe it. Populating the configuration screens on scan to email and server configuration is confusing and there is no explanation of what the fields do or what is expected to be entered.  I have an older HP LaserJet printer at another location, and it operates just fine, but the scans come through from the eprint center.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

If you are getting to the point where the SMTP Scan to Email Profile is failing on username / password, the issue might be due to not having enabled 2FA (2-step verification) and using an App Password in place of your normal email login password.

What?

Most email providers no longer support "less secure apps" and require added security.

General setup...

  • Set up / enable 2FA (2-step verification) in your email security.
  • Make a note of the App Password that you create to use with your Scan to Email Profile
  • When adding the Email Servers Profile, use the App Password in place of your normal email password
  • App and test
