Much like in this post, I changed the admin password for my HP LaserJet MFP M140w, and now I can't log in at all anymore. Neither the old (factory) nor the new password works. I'm using a password manager, so it's not like I'm making a mistake typing or something.

 

Even after resetting the printer (press & hold WiFi and 'X' buttons for 5-10 seconds) and setting it up again in HP Smart, I can't get in with the username & PIN found on the label inside the printer. Very frustrating...

 

HP Smart now just pops up with an error message, something like "service is not available", when trying to go to advanced settings. If I browse to the printer's IP in my browser it works fine, but of course that doesn't solve the problem with the login.

 

What can I do?

How to reset the printer

  1. Switch off the printer
  2. Press the red X button and the down arrow button and keep them pressed for the next few steps
  3. Click the power button and keep hold down those two button till it resets
