I had done both of those things. I checked again. I ran the downgrade three times, both with a usb connection and with Wifi. Each time I got this message:

Device Update Failed

There was an error updating the device. Please turn the device off. Then turn it back on and try again.

Thanks for the firmware! That fixed the problem.

Message for HP:
This was a pretty egregious, money-grubbing move.
You just lost a customer of 30+ years.
I'll make sure that all of my clients and customers avoid you as well.
Way to torpedo your own company...

This procedure works from a MAC OS computer... it could work from MS Windows computer if LPR daemon is enabled/working...

First, make sure you go into your HPCLJP M254dw Setup and change the following:

Setup > Service > LaserJet Update > Manage Updates:

Check Automatically = NO

Prompt Before Install = YES

Allow Updates = YES (change after downgrade to NO)

Allow Downgrade = YES

You can then download the 20200612 firmware from HP's FTP site...

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/pfirmware/HP_Color_LaserJet_Pro_M254_dw_Printer_series_202...

Then, from Terminal session, you can issue the following command to list your connected printers...

$ lpstat -p -d
printer HP_Color_LaserJet_M254dw_0 is idle. enabled since Fri Nov 6 17:47:06 2020
system default destination: HP_Color_LaserJet_M254dw_0

Ensuring your printer is idle, then execute the following command in Terminal session to downgrade your firmware... making sure you reference your specific printer name (in last command output) correctly...

$ lpr -P HP_Color_LaserJet_M254dw_0 /Users/<username>/Downloads/HP_Color_LaserJet_Pro_M254_dw_Printer_series_20200612.rfu

You should see, after brief delay as print job (firmware) is downloaded to the printer, a black screen on the printer's LCD that shows "HP" and "Energy Star" and update status bar...

Wait until the printer downgrades and shuts down/reboots... should take about 2-3 minutes...

You can check firmware code in the Service menu... to ensure the firmware downgrade was successful.

If not, simply try again.

I hope that helps!

HP Support has since removed the file from their FTP servers... hence link is now broken.

Clearly, HP does not want to support customers in downgrading the firmware on their printer.

I would suggest searching internet for the RFU filename to locate a download site...

"HP_Color_LaserJet_Pro_M254_dw_Printer_series_20200612.rfu"

Guys,

Those of you who are having trouble with the firmware update... here are some tips to get you going:

1. Make sure you enable firmware downgrade in the front panel "Service" section on the printer.

2. You can send the firmware over the network, including wireless, as long as the printer's network settings are configured correctly in setup on the printer. You do not need to be directly connected to the printer to send the downgrade firmware.

 3. It is somewhat confusing that when you run the firmware utility that you downloaded from the link described herein, it says the printer must be in the "Ready" state. Don't worry about that. The printer should be at the screen that displays the "Supply problem" message at the time you run the utility to send the downgrade firmware.

4. After the utility runs and sends the downgrade firmware, you can tell it is complete when you see a yellow smiley face image. When you see that, it is complete and can be closed.

5. This is CRITICAL: After the firmware utility completes, close it and turn off the printer using the power button on the front of the printer. THEN, UNPLUG THE POWER CABLE and wait 15 seconds. This ensures the printer's RAM is cleared, and it resets the PRAM in firmware. Next, plug the power cable back in, and push the front panel power button to restart the printer.

6. IMPORTANT: When the printer comes back up after initialization, it will likely STILL display the "Supply Problem" error. Don't worry. Just WAIT and give it like 5-10 minutes, then magically at some point you will see "Programming..." on the LCD, and it will begin the process of installing the firmware that you sent from the utility program. After that process finishes, it will reinitialize and your problem should be solved.

The important piece people may not understand is, the utility only SENDS the new firmware into the printer's storage. It does not install the firmware. Firmware upgrade/downgrade binaries are held in storage until a hard reset occurs, and the next firmware check fires. This occurs a few minutes AFTER you unplug and then restart the printer.  So be patient, and it will work.

Thanks for the info. I used the firmware location provided by NajSeav and used the instructions from AmericanPatriot. Thanks for your help to resolve the HP Maleware they sent as a supposed update. Shame on them.

Hello NajSeav
I have the same problem and tried to download the link to get the old software but when I downloaded it, it was a Windows file

😞

I am running an iMac with Catalina OS  - please do you have a link for a Mac version>
Also, once I've got the file, how do I get it onto my printer?  Printer is connected with cable, not wireless.

Sorry, I'm not very technical, but I hope you can help me.

I cannot find this file anywhere:

HP_Color_LaserJet_Pro_M254_dw_Printer_series_20200612.dmg

Does you have a link that works for this file?

Thanks
