Microsoft Windows 11

How does the HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4530 All-in-One Printer retain its configuration memory? Is it powered by a battery or capacitor? How can it be accessed for replacement?

For some time now, whenever I disconnect the printer from power, it requires reconfiguration, including selecting the language, country, and printing a cartridge setup page. However, the WiFi configuration is retained. Any leads? Could it be something other than a CMOS power issue?

Hi @3jam3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Firmware Update: Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates on the HP support website and follow instructions for updating.

Factory Reset: Perform a factory reset to potentially resolve memory retention issues. This can often be done through the printer's settings menu:

  • Access settings and look for a factory reset option.

Persistent Storage Check: Verify if there is any sign of battery/capacitor leakage or visual damage near memory storage components, although typically not user-serviceable.

Reconfiguration of Settings

To reconfigure settings after power loss:

  1. Language and Country Selection: Follow the on-screen prompts on the printer display after it powers back on.
  2. WiFi Setup: Typically retained but if lost, reconnect using:
    • Home screen -> Wireless icon -> Settings -> Wireless Setup Wizard

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the warm welcome—I too am positively ecstatic. Unfortunately, the advice given has been about as helpful as a broken compass in a maze. The printer is old, and HP has long since stopped supporting it, refusing to publish updates for years. The firmware is as updated as it will ever be—unless I stumble upon a secret hacker cult dedicated to reviving ancient office equipment.

I still have no clue whether the configuration memory has a battery backup. For now, searching for that component deep inside the printer feels like an afterthought—a wild goose chase without a map. And since I lack a service manual, disassembly without this knowledge would be less of a bold technical endeavor and more of an ill-advised stab in the dark.

In summary: having learned nothing new, I continue to wait for genuinely useful hints—ideally before the printer decides it only speaks in riddles.

Regards.

@3jam3, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you so much for posting your query! My colleague is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.

I’m here to help, and together, we’ll work through this!

The HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4530 does not use a battery or capacitor to retain configuration memory. Instead, it relies on non-volatile EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory), which is designed to store settings such as language, country, and initial setup information without requiring continuous power. This type of memory should retain data even when the device is unplugged.

Is There a Replaceable Battery or Component?

No. The DeskJet 4530 has no internal CMOS battery or capacitor specifically for memory retention. All configuration data is stored electronically within the EEPROM, and this chip is not user-replaceable

Your printer is not backed by a battery or capacitor for memory retention. The behavior you're seeing likely stems from a fault in the EEPROM or internal firmware state, not a hardware backup failure.

I truly hope this helps. If you have any questions or need any further clarification, just let me know – I’m happy to guide you through it and make sure everything works perfectly.

Take care, and I hope you have an amazing day ahead! 😊

Problem solved? 🎉 That’s fantastic! If you could mark this as the Accepted Solution, it would help others find their way here faster. And if you found this helpful, a simple ‘yes’ would mean a lot – it makes my day and gives this reply a little street cred! 🏅

Thank you for the explanations. I finally got a clear answer. It looks like I’ll have to accept this issue and go through the setup process every time I disconnect the power. It's time to start looking for a new device. Unfortunately, none of the currently manufactured models use 652 cartridges, and I still have a few in stock. Besides, it's hard to find a model with such a compact design, with a paper feeder within the device's frame, duplex printing, and a convenient touchscreen panel. I can't find anything like that in HP's current lineup. Unfortunately. Choosing will be difficult, and I don’t want to switch to a competitor.
