Hi,

We have a bunch of HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M653 and HP LaserJet Enterprise Flow MFP M633 at our institute. These printers are publicly available so I wanted to implement a way to print more securely.

Initially, we used generic drivers to add these printers to the host, but generic drivers don't allow advanced printer features like stored jobs. After a bit of digging, I stumbled across HP Easy Admin which lets me download the essential software and the printer-specific drivers which is needed to configure stored jobs. My first impression was that I only need the print driver to enable stored jobs. So I copied the driver HP Color LaserJet M652 M653.gz using scp from the iMac I installed HP easy admin to another iMac that doesn't have HP easy admin or any of the HP drivers. I then tried to add the printer on the iMac using lpadmin and was able to add the printer successfully. However, when I try to print something, I'm prompted to install printer software to print. So, I guess I need to install HP easy admin or just the basic printer software to print and configure stored jobs. However, we have a fleet of iMacs (40+) and it's not possible for me to go to each machine and install printer software. I have created a script to deploy the print driver easily but I also need to install HP easy admin or the basic software to print. I know I can use Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) to remotely install packages, however, I can only install .pkg or .mpkg files using Apple Remote Desktop. The HP easy Admin has a filetype of .app which can't be installed using ARD. I feel like I've hit a roadblock here.

What are my options in deploying the basic printer software remotely without causing disruption to our users?

Thanks.
