I have a HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP (printer). After upgrading to Windows 10 and having to install a Universal Driver to work with the printer, I lost the nice computer controls for scanning, printing, faxing, etc. Instead I have HP Smart, which appears to have replaced the original control software that came with the printer. When I use the HP Smart, it says to setup the printer. When I do setup I get an error message that the printer status is unknown. I have been unable to change the "status". The printer prints on command from Word, Excel, etc. If I try to scan a document I can not save it to the computer as I get an error message to connect the printer to the computer. That results to me having to go elsewhere to scan pictures, documents, etc. to save to disk/thumb drive, or to use for work. How do I make my machines "talk" to each other? Change the status so that HP Smart recognizes my computer and my printer to recognize the computer. The printer and the computer are set up through my router (wireless).

The following is a "best guess" scenario - I do not have a laser printer and sometimes the "differences" mean that I miss something.
The Full Solution Software is still available for your printer:
HP Color LaserJet CM1312 MFP Series Full Solution
If you "upgraded" to Windows 10 as opposed to simply installing the new version of the Windows software, any existing printer software did not survive the upheaval caused by changing the version of the Operating System. This is typical and programs (software) other than the printer software might also have been impacted.
The Basics...
- Uninstall existing printer software from Programs and Features.
- Restart the computer and log in.
- Download-save-install the Full Solution Software.
- Restart the computer and log in.
In general, removing and then installing the software should take care of "connection" issues.

Once the printer is on the network, if the feature is available on your printer, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to manage and configure your printer.
Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

HP Smart can be used "stand alone", that is, without having installed the Full Solution Software.
As you have discovered, the interface is different from the conventional printer software; the features available in the HP Smart application should work.
It might be necessary (if you decided not to install the Full Solution Software, for example) to first connect the printer to your wireless network. Category User Guides provides a number of resources (including the actual printer User Guide). It might be worthwhile to check the category for resources that might help with the setup.
HP Smart for Windows software is also a program that can be uninstalled from Programs and Features.
As with other software, after HP Smart is uninstalled, Restart the computer and log in.
HP Smart for Windows 10 is available from the Windows Store.

Thanks.
I bought windows 10 and loaded it. Yes it did wipe old software and related connections. I did install the driver you suggested and did not have any luck. I contacted HP and thier resource took over and loaded the Universal Print Drivers vs. the "full solution" you suggested. It did not correct the problem of using HP Smart recognizing my printer. I do have my tablet working with HP Smart and another wireless printer with no problems.
I will continue to work on your suggestions. Thanks for the reply.
