My formerly trusty Deskjet 1050 J410a printer does not work on my new MacBook Air running Mac OS 14.5 (Sonoma). When I try to add the printer, the only drivers appearing on the 'Add Printer' and 'Printer Software' menus are 'HP Deskjet Series', 'HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5', and 'Generic PCL Printer'. Having added the printer, both 'HP Deskjet Series' and 'Generic PCL Printer' drivers yield the same result: Printing a document produces a print progress window that shows printing in progress to completion, but the printer prints nothing. The printer is on, connected, and loaded with paper. Can someone help me get my 1050 working on this new Mac?

Just check the USB cable is connected between printer and Mac computer.
Then once USB cables are checked, go for driver install following the next steps:
1. Please download and install HP Printer drivers for MacOS from the next link:
2. And go to System Preferences > Printers then Add the printer.

Thanks for trying to help, FerRX, but https://apple.com/HP_Drivers.dmg does not exist (apple.com: "The page you’re looking for can’t be found."). And in your post, https://apple.com/HP_Drivers.dmg actually points to https://updates.cdn-apple.com/2021/macos/071-46903-20211101-0BD2764A-901C-41BA-9573-C17B8FDC4D90/HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.dmg. What's going on?
I forgot to point out in my original post that the latest driver for the 1050 downloadable from the HP driver website is for macOS 10.12. That's why I tried the generic drivers, but they did not work.
Is there a macOS 14 ( or other recent macOS) generic PostScript driver I could try? I looked for one but was unsuccessful.
