I recently bought a new HP Deskjet 1112 printer and tried to install the software (from the CD) on a Dell
laptop running Windows XP (SP2). The set-up program prompted me to update the Microsoft.NET Framework to
V3.5 (I had V2.0), which I did. The install proceeded normally until the end, when the printer setup window
should have opened. Instead, the computer hung. I rebooted the computer and saw two HP icons on my desktop.
I clicked on one and got a BSOD. I rebooted and uninstalled the HP software and tried a fresh install. This
time I downloaded the latest version from the HP website. As before, the set-up program ran normally until it
got to the point where it should have prompted me to connect the printer and the system hung again. Upon
rebooting, I got a BSOD when I clicked on the HP icon on my desktop.
I then uninstalled everything including the .NET update and used System Restore to restore my computer to its
previous state before I first tried to install the HP software. I installed the Microsoft.NET Framework V3.5
plus all the relevant updates from the Microsoft website. I then used the Microsoft.NET Framework Setup
Verification Tool to verify that the Microsoft.NET Framework was installed correctly on my computer. I then
ran the HP set-up program (the most recent version from the HP website) and attempted a fresh install. Again,
the set-up program ran normally until it got to the point where it should have prompted me to connect the printer
and the system hung again. Upon rebooting, I got a BSOD when I clicked on the HP icon on my desktop.
I've contacted HP support about this using Chat as well as phone support. Unfortunately, these methods were not
useful. The HP reps I chatted with or spoke to offered only generic advice which was geared towards novice PC
users.
Has anyone else tried to install the HP software for a Deskjet 1112 printer on a PC running XP? Anyone have the
same problem? Does it matter what version of XP is used (I have SP2) or does it have to be SP3?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey @rjmodic,
I don't know the answers to those questions. Whoever actually programmed the drivers made it clear, that the minimum system requirements were SP3, so there was obviously a big enough change from SP2 that this was warranted. Windows service packs usually have numerous fixes and updates that can effect the way software/drivers need to interact to function correctly.
This doesn't mean it won't work, but it isn't expected to thus it wouldn't be supported. With that said, I'd still like to try to help. I recommend creating a new Windows profile and reinstalling the software there to verify the issue is not a conflict with your profile.

Hey @rjmodic, welcome to the HP Forums!
I would like to help you with this blue screen crash you are experiencing. Please help me understand the issue a little better. You stated that you are getting this blue screen crash when trying to install the printer, do you see an error on the screen, and when/at what point does the screen go blue? Does the screen go blue when you plug the Deskjet in? Are there any error messages on either the computer or the printer? Has the printer worked with the computer in the past?
My gut tells me that maybe you have the printer USB cable connected to a USB 3.0 port in the computer instead of a 2.0 port. The image below is a few examples of 3.0 ports.
3.0 ports are supposed to be backwards compatible, but I have seen this blue screen issue occur when connecting a printer using the 3.0 port.
I’ve done some digging around and found an HP document that supports my suspicion; Windows 7: A Windows Stop Error (Blue-Screen Error) Occurs When Plugging an HP Printer into the Comp....
^ This document says it pertains to Windows 7, but I imagine the solutions would apply to XP as well.
One the other hand, if I am hitting a foul ball here, and you are not using the 3.0 port, let me know. I will gladly do some additional research to see what else could be causing this. Please post back with the requested details so that I can better understand the issue.
Please let me know if I hit a home run (resolved the issue with one post). I look forward to hearing from you! In fact, if this posts has helped you to resolve the issue, please click the Accept as Solution button below to mark your post as solved.

Thanks for the reply.
My laptop only has USB 2.0 ports.
The system hangs (not BSOD) while running the set-up program for the printer software. The hang occurs right after the software installs but before the prompt would occur to plug the printer in.
A BSOD occurs after I reboot and click on the HP software icon on my desktop.
No error messages except a generic "Fatal System Error" message when the BSOD occurs. There are no error messages in the Event Viewer either.
This is a new printer and has never been used before.
Will the HP printer software work with any version of XP or only SP3? I have SP2.
Thanks,
Bob

It does appear that Service Pack 3 is a requirement. I checked the Printer Specifications and found the following under the system requirement:
If you upgrade to SP3 and still experience an issue installing, let me know and I will do all I can to help.

I wonder what the difference is between SP2 and SP3 of XP that would cause a problem for the printer. I thought SP3 was just a collection of bug or security fixes to XP? If the HP printer software does require SP3, why didn't it give me an error message at the start of set-up? I did get an error message saying that I needed to upgrade the .NET Framework to V3.5. Surely the set-up program would have the ability to check the version of the operating system as well. By the way, one of the support people I had a chat with, seemed to think the HP software would work with any version of XP.
