I recently bought an HP Deskjet 2540, and while most of its functionalities are working as expected, one of them doesn't: the copying of documents. Whenever I use the copy-functionality of the printer, it will only scan in Letter-size, meaning that it cuts off about 2 centimeters from A4-documents. Since I intend to use this printer primarily to copy A4 sized documents, this is a major problem.

I have looked around on these forums for potential solutions and I have tried a multitude of things, but none of them work. I have tried setting the local settings to A4, such as via 'Devices & Printers' and the desktop application, but unsurprisingly this didn't work. I have also tried changing the settings on the printer itself via the web interface, both changing the paper settings and the region of the printer, but that didn't solve the issues either.

The changing of the region did have a minor effect when I changed it from 'The Netherlands' to 'Germany', but it only caused the page to be compressed slightly, rather than copying in full A4 size. I have included images:

The original scanned document:

Original.jpg

Copied using the Netherlands as the region:

Dutch copy.jpg

Copied using Germany as the region:

German copy.jpg

Copied using the United Kingdom as the region:

UK copy.jpg

As you can see, all three copies are missing the top two centimeters, indicating that the copy-functionality is scanning in Letter-size rather than A4, regardless of set region.

Scanning using a PC does work properly, as the above images were scanned using the same printer. The same goes for printing - I am aware that this is a potential workaround for getting the printer to copy properly, but this is NOT an acceptable solution. One of the two primary reasons I bought this printer was specifically so I would not have to use a computer to copy documents.

So now I'm wondering if there is some setting I have missed that allows me to properly copy in A4 size. I hope someone can help me with that, because if not, I will have to return this printer to the store.

Thanks in advance...

Hi,

That is expected behavior, as per the printer specifications and capabilities.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03811750

See the 'Paper-handling specifications > Print margins' section,

The bottom margins must match (or exceed) 1.45cm in the portrait orientation, the hardware cannot print below that margin.

Scanning and printing by selecting Fit to Page would be the only possible workaround.

Be aware that most HP Deskjet printers without fax provide similar limitations and cannot print on the bottom margin too.
