@Hamish123456, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Follow the steps below-

Step 1: Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges

When you set up your printer for the first time, you must install the SETUP ink cartridges that came with the printer. Check the label on the ink cartridges to make sure the ink cartridges are labeled SETUP.

  1. Open the door to access the ink cartridges.

  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. Remove the ink cartridges from their slots, and then check the labels.

    • If the ink cartridges are not labeled SETUP, do not continue with the steps in this document. Return the printer to the retailer.

    • If the ink cartridges are labeled SETUP, continue to the next step.

    • If your printer was working fine, and you installed new ink cartridges, continue to the next step.

  4. Reinsert the ink cartridges into their slots.

  5. Close the ink cartridge access door.

If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Remove the ink cartridges

Remove the ink cartridges, and then continue to the next step to reset the printer.

  1. Open the door to access the ink cartridges.

  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. Remove both ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.

Continue to the next step.

Step 3: Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer failures.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    NOTE:

HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Continue to the next step.

Step 4: Insert one ink cartridge

Initialize the printer in single-cartridge mode.

  1. Open the door to access the ink cartridges.

  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. Insert the black ink cartridge into its slot.

  4. Acknowledge any message you see about single-cartridge mode, and then continue with printer initialization.

    • If the error persists, continue with these steps.

    • If the printer initializes, skip to Update the printer firmware.

  5. Remove the black ink cartridge.

  6. Insert the tri-color ink cartridge into its slot.

  7. Acknowledge any message you see about single-cartridge mode, and then continue with printer initialization.

    • If the error persists, skip to Contact HP.

    • If the printer initializes, continue to the next step.

Step 5: Update the printer firmware

Go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware for steps to update the printer firmware.

Continue to the next step.

Step 6: Reinsert the missing ink cartridge

Reinsert the ink cartridge you removed in a previous step.

  1. Open the door to access the ink cartridges.

  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. Reinsert the missing ink cartridge into its slot.

  4. Close the ink cartridge access door.

If the error persists, keep me posted for further assistance.
