If you're configuring the printer for WiFi direct mode then there's an SSID (name) and a password associated with it.
Reset the printer and try to connect to the modem/router.

Page 62 of the users manual explains the WPS push button method to connect to a modem. This doesn't require a password but you have about two minutes to find the modem and push the button on it.
Official HP way to connect but mostly uses words and only a few pictures.

Let me know if you have a flex system (WiFi boosters or repeaters) as the setup is much more complicated.

Beemerbiker-thanks for your response. It is not for connecting to wi-fi/router. Once the printer connects to wi-fi and the bluetooth pops up the Deskjet 2600 --it's asking for a password? can't get any further than that?? Where would we find/get this password??

I am confused.
As far as I know there are no hp printers that use Bluetooth to print.
HP Smart, when used on a smartphone, uses Bluetooth to communicate with Bluetooth enabled HP printers but only for configuration purposes. Once the printer is configured then you print from a smart phone , laptop, tablet, etc., using Wi-fi. The WiFi user goes directly to the printer using WiFi direct or it goes through the router using a normal Wi-Fi connection.
You should not be attempting to pair a smart phone with an HP printer over bluetooth.
The video below shows how to use Wi-fi direct to print directly to the printer and not go through the modem
