One of the recent updates removed the HP Deskjet 5100 series, it is now found under Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 5150 series. You will need to do the Add a Printer on the Windows 7 machine.

The \\xpname\printername stuff was for the case where the printer is connected to an XP machine and shared over the network.
If you are actually connecting the Deskjet 5150 directly to the Windows 7 machine with a USB cable you will want to use the procedure here. You can click Start, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, Local Printer, LPt1: (for a placeholder), Windows update and follow the steps in this post to make sure the driver is available, then just cancel the Add printer dialog and follow the procedure in the link I gave above.
