HP 309a
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I received  a dialog on the bottom right of my custom desktop PC monitor regarding an update for HP printers.  The request for Yes or No was to allow this update.  Since I have never seen this before, I am concerned that this may be malware related especially since the 309a printer has not had an update for some time. My version of the HP solution center is at 140.0.18.23.

No solution for a continued C309a fax scanning problem appears to indicate there has not been any recent fixes or updates since I recently reinstalled the total printer software package from the HP web site.  The fax does not start to scan or in a recent case the WiFi did not appear to be functioning.  My solution for the Fax has been to cold boot the printer.

I read that the HP upgrade utility has been discontinued.  Perhaps an alternate method is being used.  Is this dialog on the bottom right to proceed with a printer update legitimate or malware?

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you received an update for your HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Printer - C309a and would like to know if its a genuine update or not. The only options were to click on Yes or No. I'll be glad to assist you with this.

I did check the HP website and see that there are no recent updates for this printer. There are no recent drivers or firmware updates for this printer model.

If the popup for the update appears again then request you to share a screenshot of the message for better understanding.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted. Cheers! 🙂

I also checked the HP website to see if there were any updates.  I did not find any as I supected.  Unfortunately, because the update utility was discontinued,  I did not find an alternate automatic update function as standard with others, e.g. Microsoft etc.

I am always careful to avoid differences to the norm that in this case might appear to be a replacement for automatic updates.  This could leave others with less experience potentially vulnerable.

Thank you for replying.

You're right that it can leave others with less experience potentially vulnerable. However, I'm glad that you were quick enough to check the HP website for the updates.

Please feel free to keep me posted for any further assistance.

Happy printing! 🙂
