I would like to downgrade the firmware on my HP4100e inkjet.   I have found several posts describing how to do that, but

1.  Is the legacy firmware different for each computer?  If so how do I find the firmware for mine?

2.  I would like to do this as I have a large number of ink cartridges that have the correct name (XL67) but were made by 3rd parties.

Help would be appreciated.   PS. My Windows 10 is hooked to the printer by USB.  I do not see a USB input near the control panel as some described.  In the meantime I get a E0 error when I insert a cartridge.

Hi @bbbacres

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing your situation so clearly. I truly understand how frustrating it must feel when your trusted printer no longer accepts the cartridges you’ve chosen—especially when you’ve made a thoughtful, budget-conscious decision. I appreciate the effort you’ve already made to find a solution.

Let’s walk through this together.

First, I want to be transparent: firmware updates on HP printers are automatic and cannot be disabled/downgraded.

These updates are designed to improve performance, security, and compatibility, but I understand how this can impact your ability to use certain third-party cartridges, especially when affordability is a top priority.

To help you move forward, here are a few steps you can try to regain functionality:

Remove the incompatible cartridges from the printer.

Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall for about 60 seconds.

Plug it back in and power it on.

Install a different set of cartridges—if you have another set of compatible ones, even temporarily, this can help reset the printer’s cartridge recognition.

Check the HP App on your Windows PC:

  • Open the HP App.
  • Go to the printer settings or preferences.
  • Look for any options related to cartridge protection or cartridge policy.
  • If available, turn off cartridge protection. This setting may not appear on all models, but it’s worth checking.

If your printer is still not accepting the cartridges, it may be due to a firmware version that blocks non-HP supplies. While firmware updates can’t be turned off, using cartridges that are updated to be compatible with the latest firmware might help. Some third-party suppliers offer updated chips—if you’re in touch with your cartridge provider, you could ask if they support the latest firmware.

I know this isn’t the answer you were hoping for, and I truly wish I could offer a way to disable those updates. But I’m here to help you make the most of your printer with the options available.
