I downloaded the latest printer driver for HP Envy 5534. When I try to print there is no option to print in B/W; the default option is color.

I want to regain the ability to print in B/W.

Can anyone enlighten me on how to go about it ?

Thank you.

Hi @PeterPenn,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To enable black and white (B/W) printing for your HP Envy 5534 printer, follow these steps.

Open the Print Dialog: Go to the document or image you want to print, and open the print dialog. This is usually accessed by pressing Ctrl + P on Windows or Cmd + P on macOS.

Select the Printer: Ensure that your HP Envy 5534 is selected as the printer.

Access Printer Properties/Preferences:

  • Windows: Click on "Properties" or "Preferences" (this may also be under "Printer Properties").
  • macOS: Click on "Show Details" if it's not already expanded, and then select "Printer Features" or "Paper Handling".

Find the Color Options:

  • Windows: Look for a tab or section labeled "Color" or "Quality." There should be an option to select "Black & White" or "Grayscale".
  • macOS: In the "Printer Features" or "Print Settings" section, look for "Color Options" or similar, and select "Black & White" or "Grayscale".

Set to Black & White:

  • Windows: Select the "Black & White" or "Grayscale" option from the color options.
  • macOS: Choose "Black & White" or "Grayscale" from the color options.

Apply and Print: Click "Apply" or "OK" to save your settings, and then proceed to print your document.

If you still can't find the option to print in B/W, try the following.

  • Check the Printer’s Control Panel: Sometimes the B/W option can be set directly on the printer's control panel.
  • Reinstall the Printer Driver: Ensure that you have the latest driver and that it is installed correctly. Sometimes reinstalling can resolve missing options.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP support website. Updating the firmware might restore or add new options.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden,

Thank you for your prompt response. Unfortunately, it did not solve my problem because when I open print-> Properties there is no option to choose color v B/W. I can go to advanced and choose Grayscale (which by default is Off), but when I print, it still prints in color.

Do I have the wrong driver ?

Hi Alden,

I neglected to let you know in my previous post that what you suggested was exactly what I did for the last 20 or so years that I owned an HP printer.

I am looking forward to your next solution.

Thank you,
