When viewing connected devices on my computer, my printer has a driver error note on it.  There is no explanation and when I select download for driver updates and select open, it just sits there and shows no activity.  How do I find the right drivers, etc. to fix my issue?  Troubleshooting doesn't help.

Hi @SusieBookworm,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Could you share the exact printer model (for example, HP DeskJet 2700, HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130, etc.)?
  • Are you connecting the printer via USB cable, Wi‑Fi, or Ethernet?
  • Has the printer worked on this computer before, or is this the first time you’re setting it up?

Troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Device Manager
    • Press Windows + X → select Device Manager.
    • Expand Printers or Other devices.
    • Right‑click your printer → Update driver → Browse my computer for drivers → Let me pick from a list.
    • If the correct driver isn’t listed, we’ll need to download it manually.
  2. Download Drivers from HP Support
    • Go to https://support.hp.com/in-en
    • Enter your printer model and operating system.
    • Download and install the latest Full Feature Software and Drivers package.
  3. Remove and Re‑add the Printer
    • Open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
    • Select your printer → Remove device.
    • Restart your PC, then add the printer again using Add a printer or scanner.

I hope this helps.

My printer is an all in one: HP Office Jet Pro 8720 but even though it is an older model (purchased in 2018) , it still works great!

It is connected via WiFi and it has been connected to my current computer since 2025.

I followed your instructions and it says it has downloaded the driver for my printer.

Thanks for your help!
