I have an HP LaserJet 1020, which I obtained in 2007, and after much fuss, managed to get the workaround for the Mac I had at the time. When I got my new Mac (Lion) the 2011 HP drivers download worked for that.
Now I have Mac Sierra 10.12.5 and the HP download (2019 version) found at
https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US
seemed to work (adding the 1022 driver as instructed in a 2017 thread here at the HP forum), except that the printer just sits there and doesn't print. I did ensure it was powered on and plugged into the USB port. The Print function found it and sent the file to it, but nothing happened. My test with a PC computer printed flawlessly, so it's not the printer but the driver.
Is there another source for a HP LaserJet 1020 (or 1022) driver that works with Sierra?
Update - I think I mis-spoke. Apparently I had put on the 1220 driver instead of the 1022 driver! It's working now, even with the 2017 version of the driver (HP LaserJet 1022 version 1.6.1) I found here on the HP support:

@Polly5931, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thre is no driver available for this model printer to work on a macOS on the HP Support site and this printer is not AirPrint compatible. However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.
NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
