I have acquired a new in box HP Photosmart C4599 All-in-one printer, but the driver is not available. It was originally for windows xp. I'd like to use it so that I don't have to buy a new printer. Is there a way to get a driver for it that will work on windows 11? I appreciate the help.

Hi @Dave_pope198

1. Check that USB cable is properly connected between printer and computer:

2. Ok, if that driver doesn't work then try the next:

* Click YES   to say thank you,

* Click Accepted as Solution when question is answered.

Hi @Dave_pope198,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Photosmart C4599 driver issue on Windows 11. Let’s go through a few checks.

Step 1: Check Windows Update for a Built-in Driver

  • Connect the printer to the computer using a USB cable.
  • Turn on the printer.
  • On your PC, go to Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  • Click Check for updates and allow Windows to install any available printer drivers.
  • After installation, restart the computer and test printing.

Note: Windows 11 often installs a basic driver automatically for older printers.

Step 2: Add the Printer Manually Using a Built-in HP Driver

  • Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Click Add device and wait. If the printer does not appear, select Add manually.
  • Choose Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
  • Select USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB) when prompted.
  • Under Manufacturer, choose HP.
  • In the printer list, select a similar model such as “HP Photosmart C4500 series” if available.
  • Complete the installation and print a test page.

Note: The C4599 belongs to the Photosmart C4500 series. A series driver may allow basic printing and scanning.

Step 3: Install the Windows 7 Driver in Compatibility Mode

  • Download the Windows 7 full feature software for HP Photosmart C4599 from HP’s official support page.
  • Right-click the downloaded file and select Properties.
  • Open the Compatibility tab.
  • Check Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows 7.
  • Click Apply, then OK.
  • Run the installer as Administrator.
  • Restart the PC after installation.

CAUTION: Full scanning features may not function properly on Windows 11 due to driver age.

The HP Photosmart C4599 was originally designed for Windows XP and Windows 7. Windows 11 does not have a dedicated full driver, but the above methods typically allow basic printing functionality.

I hope this helps.

I was unsuccessful in getting the driver to work. It says it's for series C4400. I don't know if that makes a difference. It installed ok, but when it asks to connect my printer via usb it can't tell that it's connected and won't let me press "next".  Thank you for your help. Maybe you know what the problem is?
