okay, are you giving instructions for windows 10 or an older version of windows, as the instructions always seem a bit off.

For instance.  There is no longer a 'programs and features' instead there is an Apps & Features which is what I have been using

when I go to uninstall the drivers, it asks me to uninstall just the driver or the driver and the package (I don't recall the exact term, sorry)  I chose the driver plus package

what specific driver or selection of drivers is needed to be downloaded.  I have just been selecting 'basic driver'

I went through all the steps, but this time it wasn't able to install the printer, I would choose connection options wireless (just like all the other times) and it would have a bar going for a while and then return a red x saying that there was a problem with the wireless environment.   Following the troubleshooting options from that it is telling me to reinstall the software.

it seems that is basically what I have been doing different permuations of for the past week, uninstaling and reidownloading and reinstalling

So one of the 'tools' that it asked me to download this time had some step by step instructions, including to go to services and find function discovery provider host as well as function discovery resource publication  and make sure they were both running and set to manual.  One was set to automatic not manual, so I switched it to manual.

I then restarted,

I then ran HP print and Scan doctor, which said the problem was the printer wasn't installed.  It did successfully install the printer.  However printer wouldn't print test page.  as before, attempting to do so would result in a default error popping uyp.

Multiple times  I run print and scan doctor it tells me it has fixed recommended updates (sometimes it has this as green)  and print queue (generally because there's a defaulted test document on the printer queue) , has green checkmarks on print spooler, drive checker, device status, device manager, device online, port mach, and device confilct.  Test page is green with a partial circle and it asks me if I would ike to print a test page'

Then I get an error message popping up sayihng "the printer couldn't print (HP test print document name.pdf) because of device error.

Then I am asked if I want to try to print an internal test print page which works.  Note that item 11 on the page says Pen Alignment Status: Fail....but being that the printer printed that page that can't be the root problem.

The fact that this printer can print an internal test page  (and the evaluation print) page from print and scan doctor tells me that the printer is mechanically fine, and that my network connection is fine.

There is something else going wrong.

Note when uninstalling, I uninstall HP Envy 4500 series basic device software.  I don't uninstall HP Smart, and because I have an HP brand computer, there are other HP 'stuff' that I leave alone such as HP Desktop Keyboard, HP Setup,  HP supprot assist, etc.

also, if it helps, I try and print from my phone but get the message printer is not avaiable right now, even when printer is turned on and I have cleared out any errored documents from the queue

Is the printer connected wirelessly to the computer? If yes, is the computer using 2.4GHz band or 5GHz band?

Meanwhile, I recommend you download and install the full feature software for your printer from the below linkn and check.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL47762/mp-115701-6/EN4500_198.exe

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

thank you for replying.

printer is connected wirelessly, and has been for quite a while.  The first thing I did weeks ago when this problem first occured was to re-do the wifi settings.

I am using 2.4 hz.  My modem actually has 5hz and 2.4 hz but the printer only detects the 2.4hz channel.  But as stated, wifi messages are getting through, which is why I can print the one type of test page but not the actual test page.

Thank you for linking the exact drive file I need.  However it is named the exact same as at least 3 other downloads.

Is your computer connected the 5GHz band?

The link I have shared is for the full feature software. I recommend you download and install it and check if it helps.

my computer is connected to my router with an ethernet cable, its also connected via 2.4hz channel.

I have just unplugged my ethernet cable and tried to print a test page again, and again it failed.

Okay.

I have unhooked the ethernet cable so both computer and printer are on the 2.4 hz wifi

I have followed all the steps given above to unintall the printer as well as uninstall the drivers using the windows-run command

I have unplugged the printer for 30 seconds.

I have downloaded the driver package you linked.

I have rebooted my computer.

I have run the driver package you linked.

I have followed the install steps.  And then tried to print and failed.  I have run the HP Print and scan doctor.

THE FOLLOWING HAS CHANGED SLIGHTLY

when I tried to print a testpage with the scan and print doctor and then told it no, it didn't print, it told me that file sharing was turned off, and said this might cause issues and asked me it it wanted to turn this on and then reboot.  I selected that option and it rebooted.

After rebooting I clicked on print doctor again, it had me power-cycle the printer (but not unplug it) which I did.  It then tried to print a test page...and it failed again.  And again it asks me if I want to print an internal test page,  (I've printed these things about a dozen times now, and it's using up my ink!) the internal test page prints just fine, and now it is telling me 'the problem with your software cannot be fixed by this tool  Remove the software by clicking uninstall.  Reinstall the software with the produce CD or by downloading the latest full software.

I'm just going in circles.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled a dozen times now.

WHAT IS GOING ON!?!?
