Envoy 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

1. Installed the printer onto a desktop computer  connected wireless.

2. Chose a picture from the Internet, seleted Print Picture and Print.  The picture came out fine.

3. Chose the same pictue again and repeated rhe print procedure with the same results.

4. Chose the same picture again and selected Print picture.  This time I selected Preferences and cancelled the selection without selecting anything.

5. Any further attempts to print the same picture came out in grey scale.

6. Removed the device and re-searched for it.  Loaded the driver and the printer works normally.

Repeating the above steps repeated the same results.

Hi! @CanuckJim, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!

I understand after updating the printer firmware you have issues printing in colour from your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Have you tried printing from a different browser?

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

Are you able to make a colour copy from your printer?

Splendid analysis and remarkable patience shown. It is immensely appreciated.

Please try few steps recommended below.

Type printers in the search box. Open the printer settings.
On the right side of the screen select Devices and Printers
Choose the desired printer, click on it with right mouse button, choose Printer properties in the menu
choose the tab Advanced and click on the button Printing defaults
Now, choose the tab Color
Uncheck print in grayscale
Click on apply and select ok
Try printing again and check if it helps.

Or try the steps recommended below.

In the program you are trying to print from, click File, then click Print.
The Print window opens.
Click the button that opens the Properties dialogue box. Depending on the software program you are using, the button might be titled Printer Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.
Check the Printer Features section of the Advanced Properties menu for the Print in Grayscale setting.
If you are trying to print in colour, make sure the Print in Grayscale setting from the drop-down menu is Off.
Click OK to apply the settings, then click Print.
Check the print quality on the document.

Try resetting the browser to defaults and try printing again.

Uninstall the printer software from root level on your PC and install the latest full feature software for your printer.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Close Devices and Printers.

Update the full feature printer software using this link. Click Here

Lastly, try installing windows built-in drivers and check if it helps.

This printer belonged to a friend and was connected to her laptop via her wireless modem.  The problem was as defined previously.  She was using Winows 10 and Chrome browser.

I took the printer home and connected it to my desktop computer using my wireless modem.  I am using Windows 10 and Internet Explorer.  The printer driver was downloaded and installed automatically (Add a Printer).  This is where I documented the details of the problem.

New computer.  New modem.  New browser.  New driver.  Original printer.  Original problem.

Just to explain where I am comong from: - I am an advanced senior who first started in the computer business with Honeywell in 1965,  I have been involved with PCs since 1978.  I left Homeywell in 1990 and started my own computer business.  I sold that and retired in 2002 and have been doing free computer service for seniors since then.  This is one of those service calls.

All that being said, I admit to skimming most of your suggestions because they were automatic to me.  Today, I went back and followed your instructions step by step.  After all was said and done I still have the same problem exactly as defined originally.

There was a major upgrade to the printer dated August 8, 2018.  The printer apparently worked fine prior to that update so, of course, it is suspect.  Is there a way to reset the printer to factory status and then update again?  I am convinced that the problem is not in the computer.

Resetting the printer to factory defaults cleared the problem.  Had to reconnect and reconfigure but everything looks good now.  Thank you very much!!!
