Hi,

I am new to HP printers and scanners after having used Epson for years and years.

When using Easy Scan using the default settings for "Photos, Graphics Etc"; I get the image I want to scan, but I also get a very thin white image as an additional image the scanner things is there.

I have cleaned off the glass so there is nothing there.

It gets worse when scanning book pages with the cover open.  We usually get multiple blank images.  In addition, the image we intend to scan has not been cropped properly.

Are there any settings that can be adjusted?  Or any thoughts?

We are currently digitizing journals written by my 3rd great grandfather in the late 1890s which are too thick for the cover to be closed.  However, as mentioned, even with the cover closed for regular scans there are still phantom images that appear.  When scanning a 140+ page book, that's a lot of cropping and deleting of the blank images to do.

Please help!  We have already had to had this, our first HP printer/scanner replaced in the first month we owned it.

Thanks.

I have gone through your Post and I would like to help

Please ensure your Mac and Printer have the latest updates

Printer Firmware: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Mac update: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2015

Also try using the HP Smart App and let me know if that helps. Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c06188214

Thanks KrazyToad,

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.

I have checked the printer firmware and it is the most recent.  As for my version of OSX, I am not able to update to the latest as it will disable many programs that I use regularly that are not 64 bit, so I'm sticking with the last 32 bit version that is available.

I tried HP Smart App, and receive the following error when I select scan:

Smart App errorSmart App error

Is there a way to possibly recalibrate the scanner?

I just opened, Easy Scan, then retried HP Smart.  This time the scan window came up without the error above.  Is this the procedure that is needed?

I also did a screen shot of what is happening.  Here it is.  I have circled the 2 phantom scans, also the setting is to detect the item, but the scanner is not cropping, it is taking pretty much the whole page.

Thanks again!

Thanks for replying!

What happens when you make photocopies on the printer? Does the output have the blank images too?

Reset the printer and check the power source

Reset the printer to clear certain error states, and then check the power source to make sure the printer is getting enough power to operate the copier.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer, disconnect the power cord from the power source, and then wait 30 seconds.

  2. If you are using a power strip or multi-plug adapter, connect the cord directly to a wall outlet to make sure the printer is getting enough power.

  3. Reconnect the power cord to the printer, and then try making a copy/scan

Also, you can try using the Apple Image Capture application to scan. Here is how you do it-

Apple Image Capture comes with macOS and OS X and provides a quick and simple way to scan.

 Apple Image Capture

  1. Place the document or photo print side down on the scanner glass, and then close the scanner lid.

If your printer has an automatic document feeder (ADF), use it to scan multiple page documents at one time.

       CAUTION:

Do not load photos in the ADF.

  2. Open Finder , and then click Go in the top menu bar.

  3. Click Applications, and then double-click Image Capture.

  4. Click your printer name in the Devices or Shared list.

    NOTE:

If a Software for this device is not installed message displays after you select your printer, click Install, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.

  5. Click Show Details at the bottom of the screen.

A preview of the scan displays, and then change any of the following settings:

    • Scan Mode: Select the scanning bed or automatic document feeder.

    • Kind: Set scan as color, black and white, or optimized for text only documents.

    • Resolution: Higher resolution produces better quality images by using more dots (pixels) per inch. Higher resolution increases the file size of the scan. Use a higher resolution for scans with graphics or items that require the best detail. If you are scanning black and white text, higher resolution is not necessary.

    • Size: Use a standard paper size or select the Use Custom Size option.

    • Scan to: Select the folder you want scans to save to or use the Mail option to attach the scan to an Apple Mail email message.

    • Name: Type a name for the saved scan file.

    • Format: Select the file type for the scan.

      NOTE:

To save multiple page documents or multiple images into a single file, select the PDF or TIFF format, and then select the box next to Combine into single document. This feature is only available with these formats.

    • Image Correction: Click the pop-up menu, and then select Manual to display color change options such as brightness and saturation.

  6. Click Scan.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have previously done the power thing, the printer is not plugged into a power strip.

When I make photocopies its different as it scans the entire glass, then prints it.  The scanner is not selecting the image then printing just the image.

Yes, I am well versed in using Apple's Image Capture program.  The downfall for that in comparison to HP's Quick Scan is that to select the image, the Apple app does a complete scan, then another scan to select the image it detected, which is slower than the HP app.

I really want to use the HP app to do this scanning as it saves a lot of time.

Again, could there be something wrong with the scanner that is causing these phantom images?

Try making photocopies on the printer if you have the same issues as scanning, it could be a hardware issue.

In that case,  please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hope this helps!
