How does one go about enabling wireless function that somehow became disabled on the printer?

Possible, but let's make that the last option.

Google search your printer model hidden menu and run a semi-full reset from the hidden menu.

Try to restore the printer to factory defaults from the printers menu. The steps can be found in the user manual.

It should be somewhere SETUP-> SERVICE -> RESTORE

Thanks for the suggestion.  However, the "restore" route had already been attempted several times and did not resolve the issue.  The wireless function remains disabled.

Might the internal wireless device have failed?  Do such devices fail often?

The semi-full reset from the hidden menu worked.  I was able to go back when the wireless option reappeared and connect printer wirelessly.  It did take a little searching and guesswork on how to reach hidden menu for the HP9025 as it is not directly shown in YouTube videos.  Pressing the dark return arrow four times allowed hidden menu to show on little touchpad.

Thanks much.
