HI @Lawfer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the display panel on your OfficeJet Pro 8720 is not turning on, and only the Home, "?", and Back icons are displayed, it can be frustrating. Since you've already tried unplugging and replugging the printer with no success, here are some additional steps you can take to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer:

Unplug and Wait:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source. Wait for at least 60 seconds to ensure that any residual power is discharged.

Plug Back In:

  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This step can help reset the printer’s internal components.

2. Check Power Supply:

Power Cord and Outlet:

  • Ensure that the power cord is securely connected to both the printer and the wall outlet. Try plugging the printer into a different outlet to rule out a power issue.

Power Supply:

  • If you have a spare power cord or power adapter that is compatible with your printer, try using it to see if the issue is with the power supply.

3. Inspect the Printer’s Interior:

Open and Close the Scanner Lid:

  • Sometimes, opening and closing the scanner lid can reset certain internal components.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Ensure that there are no paper jams or foreign objects inside the printer that could be causing the display issue.

4. Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Hard Reset:
    • With the printer turned off and unplugged, hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds. Release the button, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.

5. Update Printer Firmware:

  • Firmware Update:
    • If you can access the printer’s web interface or control panel, check for any available firmware updates. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause display issues.

6. Check for Firmware Recovery Mode:

  • Some printers have a recovery mode or hidden reset function. Check the printer’s manual or the HP website for instructions on entering recovery mode.

7. Perform a Factory Reset:

  • Factory Reset:
    • If the display is not responsive and you can’t access settings, a factory reset may be required. Check the printer’s manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset without using the display.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
