My HP Smart Tank 790 series printer froze during a firmware update. Nothing works, but I get error code 8AF30001. How can I solve the problem?

Hi @Aldario,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that you are getting Error code 8AF30001 on your HP Smart Tank 790 series printer. It is happening due to a firmware corruption issue, but it can often be recovered without replacing the printer. Here’s what you can do:

Recovery Steps:

Power cycle the printer

Unplug the power cable completely.

Wait at least 2–3 minutes.

Plug it back in and restart.

Retry firmware update via USB

Download the latest firmware for your model from the HP Smart Tank 790 firmware page.

Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support

Copy it to a USB drive.

Insert the USB into the printer and follow the on‑screen instructions (if available). This bypasses Wi‑Fi update failures.

Check network stability

If you retry over Wi‑Fi, ensure the printer is on a strong 2.4 GHz connection.

Avoid updating over unstable or shared networks.

Perform a printer reset

On the touchscreen: Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore Defaults.

If the touchscreen is frozen, hold the power button + cancel button for ~10 seconds to force a reset.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.
