My printer wasn't responding so I did a factory reset.  I can't get beyond the QR code screen however as I don't have the opriginal setup cartidges, I sent these back to HP in a return envelope  when my first Instant Ink cartridges arrived.  What can I do?

Thanks

Hi @MikeKiehn,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for explaining the situation. I can see how getting stuck at the QR code screen after a reset can feel like you’ve hit a wall. On the HP Envy 6555e, after a factory reset, the printer may expect setup (initialization) cartridges again, especially if it hasn’t completed the setup process. Since those were returned with Instant Ink, that’s likely why it’s not moving forward.

To guide you correctly, could you please share:

  • A photo of the cartridges currently installed
  • The exact message on the printer screen (is it asking for setup cartridges or just showing QR code?)

In the meantime, try this to move past the QR screen

Option 1: Continue setup using HP Smart

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your Mac or phone
  2. Click “+ Add Printer”
  3. Scan the QR code or let the app detect the printer
  4. Follow the on-screen steps

👉 This usually completes setup even without the original cartridges

Option 2: Restore setup mode again

  1. Turn the printer ON
  2. Press and hold Cancel (X) + Wireless (📶) for 5 seconds
  3. Wait for the blue light to blink
  4. Retry setup using HP Smart

If it is specifically asking for “Setup Cartridges”

  • The printer may be stuck in initialization mode
  • In that case, it may not accept regular Instant Ink cartridges until setup completes

👉 We’ll need to confirm from the screen message

Next step

Share the cartridge image + screen message, and I’ll guide you exactly how to get past this without needing the original setup cartridges if possible.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @MikeKiehn,

That’s good to hear, glad the support team was able to get a replacement arranged for you.

Once the new printer arrives, just make sure to follow the setup steps carefully and test it with standard paper first to ensure everything is feeding and printing as expected.

If you run into anything at all during setup or after, feel free to reach out; we’ll be here to help.

Thanks for the update 👍
