M281fdw firmware was set to update automatically and must have become corrupted. Device will no longer boot and gives service error 49. I cannot access system setup screen and no hard reset option. Printer not recognized when connected via USB to desktop computer. I am wondering if there is a way to reinstall the firmware using a USB drive in hopes to resurrect the printer.

Unplug from USB
Turn printer off
plug into a different USB port or reboot the PC (the USB port may be hung)
Turn printer on and try running the app again. The printer needs to show up in the drop down list on the PC.
If the problem 49 occurs a second time try an older firmware
From reading this article it appears the firmware application does NOT contain the actual firmware. Instead the app examines the printer and goes and obtains the blessed version. Thus there is no actual firmware to put into the USB to flash. The purpose of doing this is to prevent firmware hacking as discussed at this non-secure site
Possibly our printer expert @Repairatrooper can provide more help.
I suspect your system needs to be serviced.
There is a repair manual here but firmware is not mentioned.
